E. LUNKENHEIMER.
OILCUPL,v Nojlrlfll". Patented May 5, 1885- N. krans. murmur-pm. vla-mmm u. c
UNITED STATES PATENT n EDMUND LUNKENHEIMER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
OIL-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,464, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed February 28, 1885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND LUNKEN- HEIMER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil- Cups, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon an oil-cup for which Letters Iatent of the United States were granted me June 3, 1884; and it consists in the adaptation to such cups of certain novel devices whereby the cup may be recharged with oil or other lubricant without removing` the cover or changing the feed, all of which will be fully shown hereinafter. p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved oil-cup, and Fig. 2 a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan ofthe oil-cup shown in Fig. l, with the feedscrew and binding-nut removed; and Fig. 4, a plan of the washer used in connection with my present arrangement ot' the refilling device.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The general construction ofthe oil-cup is similar to that described in my former patent,
and consists of the base A, cylindrical glass shell B, stein O, to regulate the feed ofthe oil, cover or cap D, hollow stein a2, and elastic washers b b', to prevent injury to the glass shell.
The operation of the cup, so far as it relates to the method of feeding the oil from it, is precisely like my former cup, lthe oil flowing from the body of the cup through the orifice a4, past. the screw-point c of regulating stem U, through the orifice a3 of the base of cup, to
the parts to be lubricated.
The position of the feed-stem G determines the rate at which the oil is fed from the cup.
D is a lever or arm fitted to the upper end of the hollowstem a2, and pressed upon by the binding-nut E through the D-washer c, one side ofthe hollow stem a2 being flattened, as at e2, to receive the washer. The lever or arm D turns upon the hollow stem a2 with more or less friction, according to the'pressure imposed upon the washer e bythe bindingnut E; but while the arm D may be oscillated upon the stem a2, the washer c is prevented from turning by the hat e upon one side, as
shown in Fig. 4, which fits a corresponding flat on stem c2, as shown in Fig. 3.
d2 d2 are stop-pins secured to the cover D, which limit the oscillating motion of the arm D'. The pressure of the nut E upon the arm D being applied through the washer e prevents the motion of the arm from being imparted to the uut, and the motion of the arm cannot therefore either tighten or loosen the nut upon the stem a?. The binding-nut E not only regulates the friction against which the arm D must be moved, but also holds the glass shell B, cover D, and elastic washers b b in position in the cup.
d is an oriiice in the cover D of the cup, through which the lubricant is introduced,
the arm D moving from right to left, and
vice versa, to open and close said orifice df, as may be necessary tov refill the cup with oil.
Referring to Fig. 2, the arm or lever D is moved in the direction to uncover the fillingorifice d', while in Fig. 3 the arm is shown in' the opposite position and the orifice d covered.
The frictional resistance due the pressure of the binding-nut E between the cover D and the washer e upon the upper and lower surfaces-of the hub of the arm D is suflicient to prevent displacement of the arm D in the proper use of the cup.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- The combination, with an oil-cup having a cover, D, provided with an orifice, d', of the' tubular stem a2, projecting through the cover and provided with a iiattened side, c2, the arm D', journaled at one end on the stem, the. washer e, bearing on the upper side of the arm, and the ilattened portion e, fitting the ilattened side of the stem, and the screw-nut E, bearing on the washer, whereby the swinging movements of the arm to cover and uncover the orifice d are prevented from being transmitted to the nut, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to the foregoing specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND LUNKENHEIMEB.
