Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY A. BEERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-RAILS.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 42.636, dated May 10, 1864; antedated May 3, 1864.
T 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY A. BEERs, of the city of Brooklyn, in the State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in the form of railroad-rails, by which any desired degree of compressibility is secured, liability to lamination principally i t' not wholly removed, and a large percentage of dead weight of iron dispensed with 5 and l do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyiny drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the formation ot' railroad-rails with an irregular web or shank of any curvilinear form to eonstitute a spring between the base and head of the rail.
To enable others to manufacture and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe its form and purpose when applied to use.
I construct a rail of any desired form of base and head, but the web or shank connect ina the base with the head or face of the rail I m xke with or of ai y desired form of curvature by what the length of the web is increased and a direct connection or support ,avoided, the departure from adirect line of support to be determined by the amount of elasticity desired, when under the pressure of the passing train.
Figure l, letter A, is a base of' any desirable form or Width. Letter O is the head ot' the rail of any form or size desired. Letter B is the web or shank of the rail of any degree of curvature or departure from a vertical or direct line of connection.
Fig. 2, letter A, is a base of any desired form or Width. Letter O is the head of the rail, which may be made of any desirable form or size. Letter B is the shank or web of the rail placed at any desired angle to avertical line.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manufacture and use of compressiblc railroad-rails, such compressibility resulting from the irregular form of the Web or shank of the rail, which thus becomes a spring ot' more or less elasticity, in proportion to the extent of departure from a direct or vertical line, as set forth in the accompanying specication and drawings thereto annexed and referred to, or by the use of any other form which Will secure or promote elasticity between tlie base and face ofthe rail.
SIDNEY A. BEERS.
