These wheels are substantially the same as those described in my last-named application hereinbefore referred to.
For the purpose of removing the snow from the space between the track-rails, I provide a cutter-cylinder 47, mounted upon a verticallymovable frame 48 and driven by belts 49 and 50 from the driving-shaft 36. The construction and arrangement of this cylinder are preferably substantially the same as in my said former application.
For the purpose of raising and lowering the frame 48, I prefer to provide an air-cylinder 51, having the piston 52 fitting therein and connected to the frame 48. Air may be supplied to this cylinder by means of the pipe 53 from the engine, or it may be exhausted therefrom, and thereby the frame or cylinder will be lowered or raised.
Secured beneath the car in the rear of the cylinder 47 is a box 54, having an open front. A plate 55 has its rear edge pivoted to the forward edge of the box 54, and its forward edge is beveled to arms 56, that are connected with the shaft of the cylinder. At each end of the box 54 is a fan-casing 59, having an open center connecting with the box 54. Each of'said casings is also provided with a discharge-spout (50, which extends upward by the side of the car and has an open end arranged near the top of the car. A shaft 61 is provided with fans 62, which are arranged in the casings 59. This shaft is also preferably provided with a pulley 63, which is adapted to be driven by the belt 64 from the main shaft 36.
The frame 48 is preferably provided at its upper end with a shaft 65, having a pulley 66, which is driven by the belt 50, and with pulleys 67, over which the belts 49 pass. I may provide the frame 48 with movable frames 68, in which the shaft 65 is mounted. These frames are made vertically movable, and are provided with threaded rods 69 and handwheels 70, by means of which the frame 68 may be vertically adjusted for the purpose of tightening the belts 49.
In some instances I prefer to construct the knives 11 as shown in Fig. 5. As here shown, the knives are of rectangular form, open at both front and rear, and secured at their centers to the elevator-chains. Any preferred number of these knives may be used.
I may also arrange upon the car a headlight 74, secured upon a bar 71, which is provided with a pinion 72, that meshes with a fixed rack-bar 73. The light 74 maybe raised,
so as to light the track over the top of the elevator, or it may be lowered when necessary for it to pass under a bridge.
The operation of the apparatus will be readily understood from the foregoing detailed description.
111 running over the road where there are no drifts the elevator and its fan may be disconnected from the driving-shaft, so that they will not be operated. The cylinder 47 may then be operated alone, and it will cut up the snow in the space between the rails and deposit it in the box 54. It will be drawn out of this box by fans 62 and discharged through the spouts 60. \Vhen the elevator is in use, the snow carried up by it will be deposited in the hopper and passed into the fan-casing, and will then be deposited at one side of the track by means of the horizontal fan. The fan may be rotated in either direction and the snow deposited at either side of the track.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a suitable car, of the inclined elevator-frame secured upon the forward end of said car, an elevator arranged upon said frame, a horizontal fan-casing arranged beneath the upper end of said elevator and provided with oppositely-extending dischargespouts, and a discharge-fan arranged in said casing and adapted to be rotated in either direction, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a suitable car, of the inclined elevator secured upon the forward end of said car, the horizontal fan-casing arranged beneath the upper end of said elevator, the hopper connecting-with the open center of said casing, and the fan arranged in said casing and provided with a conical plate arranged to direct the snow toward the outer portion of said casing.
3. The combination, with a suitable car and the inclined elevator arranged at the forward portion thereof, of thefan-casing adapted to receive material from said elevator and provided with the discharge-spouts 26, the movable cut off plate 27, arranged to close either of said spouts, and the fan 32,adapted to be driven in either direction, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in an apparatus of the class described, with a suitable car 2, and with a structure 3,inclosing the driving mechanism, of the inclined elevator secured upon the forward end of said car, the horizontal fan-casing arranged beneath the upper end of said elevator and upon the top of said structure 3, and the fan arranged in said casing and provided with a vertical shaft 31, arranged to be driven by mechanism located Within said structure 3, substantially as described.
