Description

Ju Gas Burner Socket.
No. 42,609. Patented May 3, 1864.
Iwvawior UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH TODD, OF MADISON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNER SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,609, dated May 3, 1864'; antedatcd April 1, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TODD, of Madison, in the county of Jefi'erson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burner Sockets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, said drawing representing a central vertical section of a socket.
This invention relates to the sockets by which portable pendants or the flexible tubing of the portable table-stand lights are attached to the burners of gasoliers or gasbrackets. These sockets are made of two pieces, between which the india-rubber or other elastic packing ring or rings are commonly secured by barring the edge of one piece over a shoulder provided on the other but this mode of securing the packing does not provide for the adjustment, renewal, or contraction of the packing, which, by the frequent removal of the socket from the burner and its replacement thereon, soon wears so as to fit the burner too loosely to prevent the escape of gas around it.
The object of my invention is to provide Y for the renewal, adjustment, and contraction of the packing to make it fit the burner tightly; and to this end it consists in uniting the two parts of the socket by means of a male screw-thread on one and a correspondin g female screw in the other, by which means the packing is enabled to be compressed in the direction of the length of the burner, thereby causing the contraction of its opening and make it fit tightly to the burner.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the lower, and B the upper, piece of the socket, the lower piece made of suitable form to fit over the burner, and the upper piece of suitable form to receive the end of the pendent pipe or the hooked pipe which attaches the flexible tube of the table-stand light. The upper piece has the lower part of its interior enlarged to form a shoulder, a, and below this shoulder ,there is out within it the female screw-thread c. The upper part of the exterior of the lower piece has cut upon its exterior the male screw-thread b,which fits the female screw-thread 0. e is theindia-rubber or other elasticpacking, com posed of one or more rings. The exterior circumference of this packing is such that it will enter easily 'into the lower part of the upper piece, B, and rest against the shoulder a, and its interior circumference is such that in its normal condition it will fit easily to the burner. The lower piece, A, being screwed into the upper piece, B, confines the packing against the shoulder a, and by screwing it in a little farther it is made to compress the packing in the direction of the length of the socket, and so contract its central opening and adjust it tightly to the burner, and in this way any wear iscompensated for and a tightjoint always obtained.
The male thread might be made upon the lower part of the upper piece, B, and the female thread in the interior of the lower piece, A, by making the two pieces respectively of proper form.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Uniting the two pieces of the gassocketby means of a male and female screw-thread, by which the elastic interior packing is rendered adjustable, substantially as herein described.
J OS. TODD.
