MATCH AND MODE OF MAKING.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Y NooENem GONZALEZ- GOMEZ, a subject of the King of Spain, and a resident of Cascante, Navarre, Spain, have invented certain Improvements in the Mannfacture of Matches, (for which patents have been granted in Spain, No. 0,370, dated April 12, 1.889, and in Greatllritain, l o. H362, dated September 11, 1880,) of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to what are known as wax matches, and particularly to that class of such matches wherein the wax in'ipregn ates or covers a core or stick of stiff card-board or paper.

The object of my invention is to produce a more finished and perfect match than those of this class made in the usual manner.

I11 carrying out my invention I take stiff card-board or bristol-board, or even heavy paper, and cut it into narrow strips by means of a suitable cutteras a guillotine-press, for example. The width of the strips will depend on the thickness and strength of the material from which they are cut, and also upon the size and strength which the bodies of the matches are desired to possess. The strips are then placed in a cutting-frame and cut to the desired length to form the stick of the match, or they may be so cut by hand. The sticks so cut or the strips or widths before cutting are then immersed fora proper length of time in a bath composed of four kilograms of colophony and one kilogram of stearine, to which maybe added a suitable proportion of coloring-matter if the sticks are desired to be colored. After drying, the matches are passed through a draw-plate or between rolls, which compacts the coating an d gives to the matches a smooth, finished, and rounded form. They are then dipped in an ignitible compound, as phosphorus composition, to provide them with the ordinary igniting tips or heads. The

drawing or rolling may be done before or after the strips are cut into lengths for the matches.

Matches prepared by my improved process are of a very neat appearance and are capable of being burned throughout their whole length after ignition at the tip and are susceptible of even a higher finish than can be given to the ordinary wax match.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a match havingastick of card-board. or heavy paper covered and impregnated with an inflammable composition of the character described, pressed into a rounded or other finished shape, and having a tip or head of phosphorus or other ignit-iblc composition, substantially as set forth.

2. The improved processof making matches, which consists in first cutting the stick or body of the match from a sheet or strip of cardboard, heavy paper, or the like, then impregnating or covering the same with an infian1- mable composition, then drying the same, and then pressing the same into a round or other finished form, substantially as set forth.

3. The improved process of making matches, which consists in first cutting the stick or body of the match from a sheet or strip of cardboard, heavy paper, or the like, then impregnating or covering the same with an inflammable composition, then drying and pressing the same into a rounded or other finished form, and then tipping the same with ignitible material, substantially as set forth.
