FIRE-PROOF DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,804, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed November 27, 1889. Serial No. 331,759. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX KELLING, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Im- 5 provement in Fire-Proof Doors for Dumb- Waiters, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to the openings of dumb-waiters on the different fioors in buildings, and has for its object to provide the same with fire-proof doors, so as to prevent the passage-ways from being a source of dangerin case of fire.
I will describe a dumb-waiter opening pror vided with doors according to my improvement, and then point out the novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of the opening of a dumb-Waiter as it appears from the apartment to which it belongs. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sect-ion of the same on the line y y of Fig. 1, andin which counter-balance weights are not shown. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section. Fig. at is a sectional frontview of part of a door and the opening in which it fits. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section of a portion of a door.

It will be seen from these figures that each part of the frame consists of a face-plate l, fitting against an adjacent surface of the opening A, a flange-like plate 2, united to the former and fitting against the inner side of the passage-way adjacent to the opening, and a front plate 3, united to the plate 1 and extending over that face of the wall in the compartment which is provided with the opening A and outside of the passage-way. The front plate 3 will preferably be made ornamental with headings or moldings.

Preferably the doors will be counterbalanced by weights connected to cords or chains 0. The lower door 0 is provided with a spring-catch 0 engaging with the sill or an appurtenance thereof. The upper door may also have a springcatch c engaging with the lower door, if desired. The upper part of the opening in the passage-Way is shown as closed by a plate \Vhat I claim as mv invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the passage-way of an elevator having an opening, of a metal frame fitted to said opening, consisting of the integral plates 1 2 3, the plate 1 having integral ribs, the sheet-metal doors 0 sliding between said ribs, and the metal plate 0 fitted in the upper portion of the opening, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the passage-way of an elevator having an opening, of a metal frame fitted to said opening and having jambs made of sheet metal, comprising integral plates 1 2 3, the plate 1 being bent to form ribs b b N, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the passage-way of an elevator having an opening, of a casing in said opening, sliding doors consisting of sheet metal doubled and having panels formed therein, iron frames in said doors, counterbalance-weights for the doors, and a metal plate secured in the upper part of the casing,
substantially as specified.
