UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. MCQUARY, OF HAYS CITY, KANSAS.
PLow ATTACH M ENT.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,690, dated April 15, 1890.
' Application filed December 21, 188 9. Berial No. 334,495. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. MCQUARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hays City, in the county of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plow attachments; and it has for its object to provide a draft attachment for plows of ordinary construction, which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 1
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow equipped with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device constituting my invention detached, and showing the tongue and the plow-beam in dotted lines.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a plow of ordinary construction, of which 2 designates the beam. To the front end of the latter the draft is attached in the usual manner by the whiffletrees.
4 designates an ordinarily constructed sulky, comprising the arched axle 5 and the wheels 6 6, supporting the same.
7 designates a clasp, which is composed of two straps 8 8, of iron or steel, which are connected near their central portion by means of bolts or rivets 9 9, and the front ends of which are spread apart so as to receive the tongue 10, which is mounted pivotally between the front ends of the said straps. The rear ends of the straps 8 8 are likewise spread apart for the reception of the plow-beam 2, which is clamped or clasped between the said straps by means of a bolt 12, connecting the rear ends of the latter.
The straps 8 8 are connected near their rear ends by a transverse bolt 13, upon the outer end of which is pivoted a brace 14, the front end of which is connected pivotally with the front end of the plow-beam.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this inven tion will be readily understood.
My improved attachment is capable of being applied with equal facility, and with equally good results, to any plow of ordinary construction, and it may be used in connection with a sulky attachment having wheels of any height, inasmuch as the draft attachment, as will be readily seen, is capable of self-adjustment to sulky-wheels of any height. Lever mechanism for raising the plow out of the ground may be readily mounted upon the rear end of the tongue when the latter is connected, by means of clips or in some other suitable manner, with the sulky-frame or axle, and a seat for the driver may be mounted in the usual manner upon the latter.
WVhen the device is in operation, the tendency of the draft will be in an upward direction, thereby making the draft light, while at,
the same time the weight of the driver will hold the plow well in the ground.
The construction of my improved attachment is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, and it does not necessitate the boring or drilling of holes through the plow-beam, thereby weakening the latter.
While I have herein described what I consider the preferable form of my improved draft attachment, I desire it to be understood that I reserve the right to such modifications of the same as may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I.
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A draft attachment for plows, comprising the clasp consisting of two straps secured together by bolts or rivets and having their upper and lower ends spread apart, a bolt connecting the lower or rear ends of the said straps and serving to clamp the plow-beam between the same, and a brace mounted pivotally upon the outer end of a transverse bolt connecting the said straps, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a plow, of a sulky comprising an arched axle and supportingwheels, the herein-described draft attachment consisting of a clasp having bifurcated or spread upper and lower ends, its lower ends straddling the plow-beam and secured thereon In testimony that I claim the foregoing as by a transverse bolt, 'a, brace connected pivmy own I'have hereto affixed my signature in m otally to the outer side of said clasp, extendin presence of two witnesses. ing forwardly, and connected with the plow- 5 beam, and the tongue mounted in the bifur- JAMES C.
