VICTOR POPP, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO THE POPP COMPRESSED AIR AND ELECTRIC POIVER- COMPANY, (LIMITED) ELECTRIC M ETER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,579, dated April 15, 1890.
I Application filed July 6, 1888. Renewed March 12, 1890. Serial No. 343,596. (No model.) Patented in France November 7,1887,
No. 186,823; in England November 18, 1887, No. 15,878; in Germany December 24, 1887,1io.44,74=5, and March 28, 1888, No. 47,546: in Belgium May '7, 1888, No. 81,725, and in Italy June 30, 1888, XLVI, 247.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR POPP, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Meters, (which have been patented abroad, as follows: In France,
No. 186,823, November '7, 1887; in Belgium,-
No. 81,725, May 7, 1888; in England, No. 15,878, November 18, 1887; in Germany, No. 44,745, December 24, 1887, and No. M546, March 28, 1888, and in Italy, No. 2&7, Vol. XLVI, June 30, 1888,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus whereby the time during which one or more electric lamps are in operation may be automatically measured and recorded.
My invention consists in apneumatic clock or registering device with an electromagnetic controller therefor included in the circuit of the lamps to be measured.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein my invention is illustrated, A represents a pneumatic clock of a wellknown construction adapted to be operated by periodical impulses of air transmitted to it from a central station.
E is the inlet-pipe for the clock or register, and C is astop-eock controlling the admission of air.
D is a plate-spring bearing against the lower end of the stem or cock C,h0lding it normally in its closed position, so that the air is shut off from the clock.
E is an electro-magnet, the armature of which is connected with the stem of cock C by a link F. This electro-magnet is included in the circuit of the lamps H, and is adapted to be energized, whenever the circuit is closed from the generator G to the lamps II, by means of a switch K.
the register and it remains inactive.
In operation the magnet E is normally dcenergized, and the cock C closed by means of spring D. In this case no air is admitted to W'hen, however, the lamps are lighted, by turning; the switch K the magnet becomes energized, and opening cocks C admits the air to the register, and it begins to operate and continues in operation so long as the lamps are burning and the current passing through the electro-magnet. By this means the time during which the lamps are in use willbe measured and recorded by the progress of the register.
1V hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with an electric-light circuit, of a circuit-closing switch therein, an electronragnet included in the circuit, a pneumatic clock operated by periodical impulses of compressed air, a valve controlling the admission of air to the clock, a connection between said valve and the armature of the electroanag'net, and a retractile spring; for the said valve, whereby the time during which the lamps are operated may be automatically measured.
2. The combination, with electric lights in multiple arc, of a switch and magnet in the main circuit, a pneumatic clock, a controlling-valve theret'ona connection between the valve and the armature of the electro-niagnet, and a retractile spring, whereby the time during which a group of electric lamps are in use may be measured by a single apparatus.
