\VOFFORD BROW'N, OF PARKERSBURG, EST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO FRANCES LOUISA BROWVN, OF SAME PLACE.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,535, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed May 18, 1889. Serial No. 311,335. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVOFFORD BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of food and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a new and improved puzzle, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the marbles out of the triangles. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. 3, and Fig.3 is a plan view showing the marbles placed in the triangles.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the board of my puzzle. On this board are secured the pins B, these pins being arranged in groups of three in triangular forms, each three pins being placed at one angle 1) and at the ends of the sides I) of a right-angled triangle, leaving the side opposite the right angle I) open, so that a marble can pass into the triangle at the open side. On the board A are formed four of these triangles, as shown, formed by the pins B, and at the two unoccupied corners of the rectangle on the board A are preferably placed the single pins C. One triangle, which may be called D, is arranged at one end of the rectangle, one E at the diagonally-opposite corner of the rectangle, and the other two triangles F G at the central part of the rectangle, as shown. The triangles are so arranged on the board that the open months or sides of the triangles G and E at one side of the board directly face the entrances of the triangles D F at the other side of the board, as clearly shown in the drawings.
Four marbles H are used, and the puzzle is solved by holding the board A in the hands and by manipulating the board without touching the marbles in any way until the four'marbles are gotten into the four triangles at the same time-an exceedingly puzzling and difiicult task.
The board is inclosed by the sides I, of cardboard, light wood, or other suitable material,
to hold the marbles on the board, and the single corner pins C O add to the difficulty in handling the marbles on the board.
The entrances of two of the triangles on one side of the board being directly opposite, facing the entrances of the triangles at the other side of the board A, it will readily be seen that when the board is tilted to run the and the single pins C can also be dispensed with when preferred, without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a puzzle, the combination, with a movable board, of the pins arranged on the board to form the end triangles D and E, arranged at diagonally-opposite corners of the board, the triangle G, having its entrance facing the entrance of the triangle D, and the triangle F, having its entrance facing the entrance of the end triangle E, and the single corner-pins C O, and the removable balls or objects II, adapted to enter the triangles, substantially as set forth.
2. In a puzzle, the combination, with a movable board having the sides I, of the pins B, arranged on the board to form the end triangles D and E at diagonally-opposite corners of the board, the triangle G, having its entrance facing the entrance of the triangle D, and the triangle F, having its entrance facing the entrance of the end triangle E, and the single corner-pins C U, and the removable balls or objects H, adapted to enter the triangles, substantially as set forth.
