SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 425,528, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed August 23, 1889.
To all wiz/om t may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON C. TULLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of .Ienerson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Lock and Lifter for XVindOW-Sash; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for locking and raising the sash of Windows, and partieularly ofthe windows of railway-coaches; and my objectis to provide a combined sash lock and lifter by means of which the sash is unlocked as soon as the lifter is grasped to raise it and is locked as soon as the lifter is released, and whereby the lower sash of a window when down to the bottom or up to the top of the window-frame is securely locked and when between those points will retain its position without being shaken down by the ordinary motion of a car. I accomplish these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of my invention as it appears attached to the bottom piece of a Window-sash. Fig. 2 is aview of a longitudinalvertical section of the sash-fram e, showing the bolt in perspective. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the line a: a: of Fig. 1.
Similarletters refer to sim ilar parts throughout the several figures.
o represents the bottom piece of the sash. bfis a slotted metal frame set in the center o. o.
c is the lifter made integral with a plate e, which is screwed to the bottom of the mortise in the sash-piece o.
d d are iinger-clamps riveted inthe sides of the frame b.
f f are expanding levers riveted at 'L' t' to a piece oi' metal g, set in the frame a and having the narrow arms p p beyond g, the ends of which work in a slot p in a bolt J. The lockbolt .I extends from the levers to a point a little beyond the edge of the sash in a circu- Serial No. 322,193. (No model.)
lar hole pierced longitudinally through the bottom ot' lthe sash, so as to catch in the opening m in the window-frame fn.
k is a spiral spring surrounding the bolt J and let in the circular opening in the sashpiece o to a point q, where this opening is abruptly reduced to form a seat for the spring lo, acting against the shoulder q on the bolt J.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to raise a sash provided wit-h my lock and lifter, the fingerclamps cl d are grasped between the th umb and first finger, pressing them toward the lifter O. This raises the levers f f, pushes the arms p p down in the slot p', and pulls the bolt J out of the socket m. The sash can then be lifted with one hand, and as soon as the grasp on the iinger-clamps is let go the spring k presses the bolt iirrnly against the sides of the Window-frame n and holds the sash in position, or sockets may be placed at suitable intervals along the sash-frame to receive the ends of the bolt. Without sockets the pressure of the spring will hold the sash up against ordinary jarring. The finger-clamps d. d can serve as litters and the lifter c be dispensed with; but in practice I prefer to use the lifter c for the additional strength it gives.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sash lock and lifter, the combination, with a lock-bolt having a shoulder near the locking end, a spiral spring resting against the shoulder, and a slot p in its inner end,
Working in a circular opening pierced longitudinally through the bottom piece of a sashframe from the edge to near the middle, of the expanding levers f f, finger-clamps d d, a lifter c, and a mortised frame a, substantially as described, and for the purposes setforth. A
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MILTON C. TULLY. Witnesses:
B. DU Pour, A. S. DIETZMAN.
