UNITED STATES PATENT I EEicE.
I \VILLIAM SOUTHYVICK CARPENTER AND ALFORD LEYVIS MONTAGUE, OF CANANDAIGUA, NEXV YORK.
FEED-COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,300, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed January 8, 1890- Serial No. 335,744. (No model.)
g a swaying movement a similar motion is i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, TILLIAMSOUTH\VICK CARPENTER and ALFORD Lnwis MONTAGUE, citizens of the United States, residing at Ganandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Cookers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to that class of cooking-stoves which are designed for cooking fodder for horses and other cattle; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of such stoves, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of acooking-stove provided with our improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the stove proper. Fig. 3 is. a side view illustrating certain parts. i
A designates the cylindrical casing of the stove, which is provided with a removable top B. A feed-tube C extends downward from a central opening in the top, which has a cover D.
Within the casing A, and along one side thereof, is formed an air-flue E, which extends up through the top B and downward to the bottom of the casing, so that the air is drawn down in the cylinder below and under the firepot F. The said fire-pot is located near the bottom of the cylinder A,leaving space enough below to form an ash-box, and is connected by rods awith the top plate B, The grate I) under the firepot, or forming the bottom thereof, is pivotally supported on a bar 0, and may be shaken, as hereinafter set forth. A standard (I is fastened to the top H, and to said standard is pivoted aplatc or barf, from which extends a handle g. Two vertical rods 6 are connected at their upper ends with the extremities of the pivoted bar f, and extend through apertures in the top plate B downward and are connected with the opposite ends of a plate 71-, which is pivoted to the side of the firepot. An arm 1' extends down from the plate h, and is loosely connected with a lug m on the grate b. By giving the handle imparted from the pivot-ed barf, through rods 6, to the arm 1', and the grate is thus shaken. A pipe G, provided with a cowl a, is fixed in the top of the'stove for smoke passin g therefrom. On the top B, adjacent to the upper end of the flue E, is fixed a hood 1; in position to turn air into the flue.
The device, having all its parts inclosed' in the cylinder A or attached to the top plate, is set in a tank orcask H, as seen in Fig. 1, the feed or material to beboiled or cooked being placed in the cash so that it is heated from the stove at the11center and little or no heat is lost. The draft is downward through the line E, the air passing to the bottom of the cylinder A and rising to the fire, which is kept steadily burning, and a comparatively small quantity of fuel is required to cook the contents of a large-sized cask.
The device may also be conveniently used for steaming fodder or other articles, such being placed in a barrel or box and the latter connected by a pipe 3 with the cask H, which is supplied with water, from which the steam is generated.
The casing A, with all parts of the stove, may be lifted together from the cask, and when it is desired to remove the ashes and cinders the top-plate B is removed, taking with it the fire-pot and all parts in the cylinder A except the fixed draft-flue E, when the ashes may be dumped out.
We claim 1. The combination, with a stove-casing A, which is provided with a movable top, of an air-flue extending downward from the top within the casing, as shown, a fire-pot provided with a grate and connected with said movable top, and devices for shaking the grate, which are connected with the movable top and with the fire-pot, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the cylindrical casing A, provided with the vertical flue, of a movable top plate provided with a smokepipe, a fire-pot provided with a movable grate, a pivoted bar provided with a handle and carried by a standard on the top plate, and a plate which is pivoted to the fire-pot and is connected by rods with said pivoted bar and with said grate by an arm extendingdowntoprplate, substantially as set forth'hhd deward, substantially as set forth and described. scribed. i I
3. The cylinder A, provided with a. niov- In testimony whereof We have afiixed our able top which is provided with a feed-tube, signatures in presence of two Witnesses.- 5 in combination with a fire-pot, a grate cont WILLIAM SOUTHWICK CARPENTER. nected therewith, and devices, substantially i 7 ALFORD LDllIS MONIAGUI]. as described, for shaklng the grate, sald firepot and shaking devices being so connected WVitnessesz with the top plate that they may be With- HOMER J. REED, 1o drawn from the casing by the removal of said S. F. WVAELER.
