SHIFTING ECCENTRIG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,293, dated April 8, 1890.

operation, and adapted for cutting off at any desired point or for stopping or reversing the motion of the machine whenever desired.
The invention consists of a disk held to slide across the main shaft and inclines mounted to slide and passing centrally through the said disk and turning with the main shaft.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve ment. Fig. 2 is a sectional face view of the same on the line mm of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a sectional face view of the improvement on the line a of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the inclines with one of the rim removed and the other in section, and Fig. 6 is a face view of ,a modified form of the eccentric-disk.
On the main driving-shaft A of the machine to which the eccentric is applied is secured a sleeve B, preferably made in two parts and secured by the clamps B to the said main shaft A. on the sleeve 13 are formed the parallel flat sides C, on which fits the disk D, provided with an opening D, either straight or curved, but passing through the center of the disk. Through this opening pass the said flattened parallel sides 0 of the sleeve. hen the latter is turned, the diskD is turned with it, and at the same time is free to slide across the sleeve, and consequently across the main driving-shaft A. On the disk D is held, in the usual manner, an ecccntric strap E, connected with the slide-valve of the machine.
In the two sections of the sleeve 13 are formed, diametrically opposite each other, the longitudiually-extending grooves F, in which are fitted to slide the inclines G G, secured at one end to a collar H, mounted to slide on the sleeve B, and secured at their other ends to a flanged collar I, connected with a shiftinglever for shifting the same forward and backward, so as to move the inclines G G forward and backward in the grooves F of the sleeve B. The forward and backward motion of the inclines is limited between the clamping-collars B,which are held on the ends of the sleeve B. Instead of making the latter in two parts, it may be made in one part, with the grooves F cut into the opposite sides. The inclines G fit into recesses D formed in the disk D in the top and bottom of the elongated opening D so that when the inclines turn with the sleeve 13 they carry with them the disk D, which is thus revolved, and when in an eccentric position to the main shaft A imparts a forward and backward sliding motion to the valve.
The operation is as follows: \Vh'en the eccentric is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the disk D is concentric with the main shaft A, and consequently no eccentric motion takes place. The valve is thus at a standstill. 'When the operator desires to operate the valve, he shifts the flanged collar I to one sidesay in the direction of the arrow aso that the inclines G cause the disk D to slide outward into an eccentric position relative to the main shaft A. Then the main shaft is now rotated, the usual forward and backward motion is imparted to the valve; but the motive agent can be cut off at any desired point, according to the amount of eccentricity given to the disk D. When the operator desires to reverse the machine, he moves the flanged collar I in the opposite direction, so as to cause the inclines G to slide in the opposite direction to the arrow at, whereby the disk D is moved in the opposite direction, and consequentlyimparts a reverse stroke to the valve. Thus it will be seen that by merely moving the inclines G the operator is enabled to stop the motion of the valve and to cut off at any desired point or to reverse the engine Whenever desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an eccentric, the combination, with a sleeve adapted to be secured to a shaft and havingflattened sides and longitudinal slots, of sliding inclines fitting in the slots of the sleeve and an apertured disk fitting on the sleeve and inclines, substantially as described.
2. In an eccentric, the combination, with a sleeve adapted to be secured to a shaft and having flattened sides andlongitudinal slots, of a recessed and apertured disk fitting on the sleeve and sliding inclines fitting in the slots of the sleeve and recesses of the disk, substantially as described.
