Be it known that I, JULIUs @.RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding- Machines for the Manufacture of Hollow lWare, of which the following is a specification.
The Object of my invention is to manufacture hollow waresuch as skillets-in asimple and expeditious manner and at as small a cost as possible.
My invention consists in the approved apparatushereinafter described, and designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front elevation, partly in section, of a machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly in section, of the die-block and its top plate. Fig is a perspective view of the plate or blank from which the vessel is formed, and also the vessel struck up or dished to the desired shape; and Fig. Li is a detail view showing a vertical section through the devices for adjusting the plunger-rod.
In general outline the machine employed embodies suitable framing, a reciprocating plunger, a holder t'or the sheet or disk of metal from which the vessel is formed, a die into whichthe sheet of metal is forced by the plunger, and an expeller for removing the dished vessel from its holder or die.
The machine shown in the drawings consists of a bed-frame A, on which is mounted an upright frame B, having a vertical central openiu g B,in which moves verticallythe plunger-carrier C. A main driving-shaft D is journaled in the main frame B near its upper end and carries at one end a fly-wheel E and pulleys F. At the opposite end it is provided with a pinion G, which meshes with a cog-wheel II on the crank-shaft I, which is journaled in bearings in the frame above the shaft D. The cog-wheel II is loose on the shaft I, but may be rigidly secured thereto by the clutch J, of any suitable construction, which is operated by a bell-crank lever J4', connected to a vertical spring-actuated rod J2, pivoted at its lower end to a treadle K, prefwhich nut also engages with the upper end of the screw-rod L. This nut may be adjusted to vary the length ot' the rods L and Lto ad just the dist-ance between the plungencarrier C and the nut M. The plunger O is removably secured to the plunger-carrier C, and its lower end is suitably shaped to correspond with the inside of the liollo\ v\vare vessel or dish which it is desired to form. By making the plunger removable diiierent sizes ot plungers may be used to form dishes er vessels oil' varying sizes.
The frame A is provided with a central opening'a, and the die-block Pis provided with a central openin g inclined to correspond with the shape of the vessel to be formed. The die-block is preferably provided with inclined or beveled sides, and is connected with the frame by sliding it laterally into correspondingly beveled or inclined guides p. The top plate Q ot' the die-block is provided with a central opening Q', and is secured to the main die-block by bolts q and q. lVashers q2 are interposed between the upper face of the die-block and the top plate, and the nuts are secured to the bolts outside the top plate. By this arrangement a space is left between the die-block and top plate to receive the sheet of metal or blank of which the vessel is to be formed. The bolts q are separated sufiiciently to admit ot the blank being slid into the opening g3 between the top plate and the die-block, and the bolts q are so located that the washers q2 approximate the rear edge of the central openings in the top plate and the die-block and serve to center' the plate R, from which the vessel S is formed. When the plate R is properly centered, the machine is operated to force the plunger down upon the plate and bend it in the die to the desired form. somewhat larger in diameter than the opening at the bottom ot' the die, so that the plun- The opening a in the bed-plate is IOO ger willv not abut. against the framing. This opening should be larger than the bottom of the largest Vessel made. When the vessel is formed, it is removed from the machine by the eXpeller T,reciprocatingverticallyin the opening a and adapted to pass into the opening in the die and force the vessel out. rPhe eX- peller is operated, preferably, by a treadle T.
Obviously the details of construction of the machine may be somewhat varied.
So far as part of my invention is concerned any suitable apparatus may be employed for operating the plunger; but the apparatus shown and described is simple and efficient, and is preferred. B v adjustingr the nut N the depth of the vessel manufactured maybe varied; and when there is a difference in the thickness of the metal-12 e., if a blank thinner than usual is used-the nut N may be adjusted to lengthen the rods L L', and by bringing the plunger down a second time the vessel may be completely formed.
It will be observed that the die-block is not closed at the bottom, but is open, thus 'giv-l ing it a ring shape. Skillets of any desired depth may thus be formed by employing suitable plungers. The top plate, being held a ciprocating plunger, the die-block, its top plate, the bolts for securing the top plate to the die-block, two of which are arranged near the outer edge of the die-block and two others near the inner edge of the openingin the die-block to center the blank, and washers on the bolts interposed between the top plate and the die-block.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the main frame, a dieblock having inclined or beveled sides engaging with correspondingly-beveled guides in the main frame, the plunger-carrier, the plunger removably secured thereto, a crankshaft, adjustable connections between the crank-shaft and the plunger-carrier, and t-he vertically-reciprocating expeller moving in an opening larger in diameter than the opening in the lower part of the die-block.
