DITCHING-HOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,244, dated March 25, 1890.

Application tiled June 7, 1889. Serial No. 313 ,521. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK H. ADsIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching-I-Ioes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hoes for ditching and other purposes; and the invention consists in the formation integrally of a central longitudinal ridge approximating the arc of a circle upon the inner face of the cutting-blade, extending from the point to the heel, and dishing out of the blade from the inner surface laterally from each side of said ridge in such a manner as to present an elliptical concave upon each side thereof.

The invention also consists in the combination, with the blade constructed as described, of suitable means for attaching` the same to the handle of the implement, whereby are combined in theimplement lightness,

strength, and durability of construction. The invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim. 1

In the drawings, A indicates the cuttingblade, the working-edges of which are disposed at an acute angle to each other, as at a', and from the point a to the point a2 drawn transversely of the blade and to the point a before mentioned describes in this example also a triangle; but the blade, if preferred, may be of any suitable contour of construction adapted for the purpose. The cutting or working edges of this blade are beveled off on each side to a sharp edge. From thepoint a of this blade and extending longitudinally from, at each side, an elliptical concave extending the entire or nearly the entire length of the blade, the outer surface of the blade describing a curve approximating an arc of a circle lengthwise of the blade, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the advantage of the peculiar dishing out of the blade, as described, being that in the operation of ditching a firmer hold is taken by the blade upon the earth, and `the cutting or ditching out of the earth is much more easily performed.

C indicates the'shank of the blade. In this example it is madeintegral therewith, having a perforation c near its free end, for a prurpose which will be hereinafter explained.

D indicates the handle, formed with an enlargement at its forward end and provided with an aperture near the end thereof, through which a bolt d is passed, which in turn is encircled by washer d2, interposed between a nut d* and the handle of the implement. The lower end of the bolt d has a head cl thereon, by means of which and a bridle-ring E the shank F of the blade is secured to the under side and near the end of the handle. free end of this handle D is curved downwardly at an angle to the body of the handle, terminating in an angular flaring or enlarged end, the advantage of which serves to give the operator a lirm er grasp thereon than would otherwise be the case if the end was straight or as ordinarily constructed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A hoe having a blade with a central longitudinal rib, elliptical concave depressions opposite the same, chamfered cutting-edges, and an integral shank having a bolt opening therein, and a bridle-ring and nut-bolt for securing the same to the handle, substantially as described.
