Description

(No Model.)
W T EDDS BARREL WASHER.
,102 Patented Mar. 25, 1890 UNITED V STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. EDDS, OF PEKIN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO FRANCES E. VAN ATTA, OF SAME PLACE.
BARREL-WASHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,102, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed January 4, 1890. Serial No. 335,935- ,(No model) To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. Enos, a citizen of the United'States of America, residing at Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-WVashers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to barrel-washers and it consists in an apparatus for injectingsteam, hot water, and alum-wash into barrels and casks to wash and purify the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the apparatus; and Fig. 2, a vertical section showing theinjeotorpipe, nozzle, bung, and outlet-pipe.
A represents a hollow bung having a collar or flange a and orifices a at the top and near the base and adapted to be inserted in. the bung-hole of the barrel.
Opening into the bung at thev bottom is a pipe B, communicating with a discharge-pipe C, hot-water pipe .D, and steam-pipe E, as shown in the drawings.
Passing through the bung A and pipe B and concentric therewith is a pipe F, having a collar or flange f at its lower end adapted to close the pipe B at a point just below the discharge-pipe O and terminating at the top in a nozzle G, having orifices g.
Opening into the hot-water pipe D is a pipe H, which conveys the alum-wash from asuitable tank.
(I is a valve in the hot-water pipe D, by which the flow of alum-Wash and hot wateris regulated.
e is a valve in the steam-pipe, and h a valve in the alum-Wash pipe.
I represents a frame upon which the barrels rest. 7
In operation the barrel is placed in position upon the frame I, with the bung A projecting through the bung-hole, as shown in Fig. 1. The hot Water, alum-Wash, and steam being then admitted pass upward through the pipe F and nozzle G with suflicient force to thoroughly wash the interior of the barrel, and, flowing out through the orifices a in the bung A, are carried off by the dischargepipe 0.
By means of the above described apparatus the hot Water, alum-wash, and steam maybe injected either together or separately, and will thoroughly clean the barrel and free it from all tannic acid and other impure matter, and by duplicating the parts the apparatus maybe arranged for the simultaneous washing of any desired number of barrels.
I am aware that prior to myinvention barrelwvashers have been made with two concentric pipes, the inner pipe discharging water into the barreland the outer pipe conducting it out. I therefore do not claim this broadly as my invention; but
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the hollow bung A having orifices a, the pipe B, the nozzle G, having orifices g, and the pipe F, having a fiangef, of the outlet-pipe C, hot-water pipe D, alum-Wash pipe H, and steam-pipe E, arranged as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
W ILLIAM T. EDDS.
