IMPROVEMENT 'IN BARREL CLEANSERS AND WASHERS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,621, dated August 19, 1879; application filed February 19, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GLAUs/GLISMANN, of Cuba, in the county of Alleganyand State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Barrel Cleansers and Washers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full7 clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of an end view of my device; and Fig. 2 isa side elevation of the same, partly in section.

This invention has relation to devices or machines for cleansing and washing barrels, casks, and other like vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a device of the character named simple in its several parts and effective in its operation, Ias will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a trough, of `wood or other suitable material, to receive the water or condensed'steam from the vessel. Suitably connected to the interior of the trough A is a tube, B, its eXterior being threaded to receive a screw-threaded sleeve, C, formed with vertical supports D, upon which the barrel E or other similar ves- Within the upper end of the screw-threaded tube B is removably connected a hose, F, of any suitable rigid material, said hose having upon its upper end a rose-head, a, perforated upon its top or end and sides, so as to throw the jets of steam or water in all directions against the interior surface of the vessel.

To the bung-hole of the barrel E or other vessel is secured an inverted funnel, b, to assist the water, condensed steam, or other liquid used for cleansing, in dripping -dowu over the hose F into the trough A.l

To accommodate the supports D to barrels or vessels of diii'erent size and diameter, the supports are made vertically adjustable, which raises or lowers the vessel, so that the rose-head a will be in about the center of the vessel.

The manner of adjustment of the supports D is accomplished by loosening the setscrews c and rotating the sleeve C in the proper direction, which will cause it to traverse uponthe screw-threads of the tube B until at the proper height, when the set-screws, after being brought in line with the vertical grooves d, are made to bear against them, which will hold the sleeve stationary and prevent it from being accidentally rotated.

To the lower end of the screw-threaded tube B is connected a supply-pipe, G, passing out through the end of the trough A, and terminating in branch inlet-pipes c f, which maybe provided with suitable faucets to control the amount of steam or water in the supply-pipe Gr. The importance of the two branch pipes e f will be at once apparent from the fact that steam or water may be used, or both, as found necessary; and by regulating the faucets or openings in the branch pipes, water of any de sired temperature may be obtained by allowing the steam to mix with the water as it passes into the pipe Gr. This regulation of temperature of the water is found necessary in barrels or vessels to be cleansed and washed, the temperature being regulated in accordance with the kind or class of vessels to be operated upon or the use to which they were pun-as, for instance, in beer-barrels or similar vessels used for liquors, it would require a higher temperature of water, and steam independently of the water may be used to heat and dry the vessel, thereby destroying all the sour or disagreeable effects of the old' contents, and leaving it in a condition to be used again.

The hose F, it will be noticed, is formed square or flat-sided below the rose-head a, the purpose of which is to allow the water to escape from the barrel into the trough. The hose F is formed, near its lower end, with a flange, g, which rests upon the upper edge of the threaded tube B, and supports it in a vertical position, and when required for cleaning can be detached and removed from the tube.
