UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
HARVEY F. GASKILL, OF LOGKPORT, NEW YORK; MARY E. GASKILL EXECU- TRIX OF SAID HARVEY F. GASKILL, DECEASED.
VALVE-G EAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,993, dated March 25, 1890.
Application led December 28, 1888. Serial No. 294,885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY F. GASKILL, of'V Lockport, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Gear for Duplex Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the valve motion of direct-acting duplex engines. Its primary object is to give the valves a motion similar to that caused by an eccentric in a crank and fly-wheel engine. To this end I employ a system of pantographic levers and links operated by the two pistons, whereby the pin which connects the valve-stem with said system is caused to travel in a substantially circular path, whereby the valves have the same movement with respect to their pistons that a valve operated by an eccentric in a crank l:and ily-wheel engine has with respect to its piston. v
In the accompanying drawings I have represented so much of a duplex engine containing my invention as is necessary to an understanding thereof.
Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the levers and links. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the rock-shafts.
A is one of the cylinders of the duplex engine. B is the other cylinder.
C is the valve of cylinder A.
D is the valve of cylinder B.
E is the rod of valve C.
F is a link connecting rod E with the operating mechanism. G is a similar link simiy larly connecting the rod of valve D.
H is a lever oscillated by the piston and rod of cylinder A.
I is a lever oscillated by the piston and rod of cylinder B.
P is a rock-shaft operated by lever H.
Q is a rock-shaft operated by lever I. Rockshaft Q is preferably made in the form of a sleeve on rock-shaft P, so that the two shafts may be concentric.
M and N are arms on the adjacent ends of rock-shafts P and Q, respectively.
J and K are links pivoted, respectively, at one end to arms M and N, and at the other end pivoted by L to link F.
R and S are arms on adjacent ends of rockshaft-s P and Q, respectively, but at the opposite ends of the rock-shafts to M and N.
T and U are links pivoted at one end to link G. by pin V and at their other ends to arms R and S, respectively.
Now, if the main pistons have the same motion as in a quarter-crank engine it will be found that the pins L. and V travel in true circular paths, and they will vary from a true circle to a true square according to the uniformity of the motion of the pistons; but in all cases the valves which are operated by the pins L and V will have the same motions and positions relative to their respective pistons that they have in a crank and fly-wheel engine.
In speaking of the connections between the valve rods or stems andthe arms of the rock shafts as being a direct connection I do not mean that the rods or stems are themselves immediately secured or attached' to the arms, but use the term direct to distinguish the present construction from that shown in my prior patent, No. 370,776, in which the valve-stems were connected with levers, which latter were in turn connected with'the arms of the rock-shafts by means of links. The prior construction produces an essentially different movement or motion from that herein shown.
WVhat I claim is-ip 1. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the two cylinders, each provided with piston, piston-rod, valve, and valve-stem,two 85 rock-shafts operated, respectively, by said pistons, a pair of arms for each valve-stem, one on`l` each rock-shaft, and a link connecting each valve-stem directly with each arm of its respective pair. 9o
2. The combinatiom, substantially as set forth, of the two cylinders, each provided with piston, piston-rod, valve, and valve-stem, two concentric rock-shafts, one within the other, operated, respectively, by the pistons, a pair 9 5 of arms for each valve-stem, one on each rockshaft, and a link connecting each valve-stem directly with each arm of its respective pair.
3. In combination with two cylinders, each provided with a piston, piston-rod, valve, and roc valve-stem, two rock-shafts operated by the respective pistons, :i pair of arms for each rock-shaft, and links connecting each vnlvestem directly with one arm of each pair.
4. In combination with two cylinders A B, each provided with :i piston, piston-rod, valve, and valve-stein, t rock-shaft P, provided With arms M and R and lever H, a rock-shaft Q, provided With :mns N :ind S and lever I, links J :ind K, connecting,r the arms with e, link F, secured to the valve-stem of one valve, and links T and U, connecting the arms R and S with t link G, secured to the valve-stein of the other valve.
5. In combination with two cylinders, each provided with :i piston, piston-rod, valve, and
Valve-stern, a rock-shaft P, provided with a lever H for connection with one of the pistonrods, and also having,r arms M and R, a. hollow rock-shaft Q, encircling shaft F, and provided witll arms N and S, and also with an arm or lever I for connection with the other piston-rod, links J and K, connecting the rr-ms M and N with a link secured to the stem of 011e valve, and links T and U, connecting the arms R and S with a link secured to the valvesteln of the other valve.
