- Duplex engines especially those employed for pumping, are frequently provided with crossconnections, by which thc piston-rod of one engine is made to move the valve-rod of the adjoining engine. This has usually been accomplished by lever'connections, and if one engine does not fully complete its stroke the valve ot the adjacent engine may not be fully moved, and the connections are such that the valve oi' one engine cannot be completely moved before the termination of the stroke of the adjoining engine.

Be it known that I, LEON B. Gannreannnn, of the city, county and State of New York, haveinvented an Improvement in Duplex Engines, of which the following is a specifica tion.
Duplex engines, especially those employed for pumping, are frequently provided with crossconnections, by which thc piston-rod of one engine is made to move the valve-rod of the adjoining engine. This has usually been accomplished by lever'connections, and if one engine does not fully complete its stroke the valve ot the adjacent engine may not be fully moved, and the connections are such that the valve oi' one engine cannot be completely moved before the termination of the stroke of the adjoining engine.
ln valve-gears for engines oi' the general character represented in y my Patent No. 803,706, a rocker is made use of that is acted upon by a tappet on the piston-rod.
My present invention relates to a duplex engine in which the rocker of one engine acts upon the valve of the adjoining engine, and the connections are crossed in a peculiar manner, as hereinafter described, so that the valve of one engine is moved bythe rocker of the adjacent engine, andthe valves can be moved at any desired point in the stroke, because the operative portion of the rocker is notnceessarily of the same length as the stroke of the engine, and the tappet upon the piston-rod can pass beyond the end of the rocher in completing the stroke, thus rendering the movement of the Valves independent ofthe extent of motion given to the piston and rod of the adjacent engine.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the duplex engine and rockers, with the steam* chests in section, and with the standard for the right-angle levers partly removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the piston-rods, showing the rockers and connections to the valves in elevation.
The cylinders A B, pistoniods C D, and valve-chests E F, are to be of any desired character, and the valves in the respective valve-chests may be such as shown in my aforesaidpatent, or of any other known description.

according to the style of engine.
I have shown bent or right-angle levers P and Q, pivoted at 2 3 upon a standard, R. Tbeselevers stand in opposite positions, the nearly horizontal ends being connected by links S T with the respective rochers, and the valve-rods N O are united by links to the upper ends of the respective levers P Q. By this arrangement the parts will not interfere With each other at the points of crossing, and the same parts for one engine are duplicated and interchangeable for the other engine.
In cases Where the rockers have arms eX- tending up from the middle above the pivots, as in my aforesaid patent, the connections can be made directly from the upper ends by a link to the valve-rods; but these arms will require to be placed in such a manner, or bent, in order that they may not interfere with each other in crossing; and where the valves are moved by connections to rock -shafts and crank-arms, as in the duplex pumping-engines heretofore made, each rocker may be placed vertically above the piston-rod, as in my aforesaid patent, so as to apply my improvement to this class of pumping-engines.
The valves of the engines may be of any desired character; but it is preferable to employ valves and ports such as shown'in my Patent No. 303,704, in order that each piston may be cushioned at each end or the strokes and stop Without any concussion after having moved the valve of the adjoining engine.
I claim as my invention* l. The combination, with the valve-rods Sii and piston-rods in a. duplex engine, of two rockers and tappets upon the pistonrods, and connections that cross from the rocker of one engine to the valve-rod of the other engine, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the rockers G H and tappets L M, the cylinders A B, valve-chests and valve-rods N O, levers P Q and links S T, crossing from one engine to the other, substantizilly as set forth.
