IMPROVED CASTEFI.

To all whom t may concern.-

Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN KNrsELY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Caster 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line x ai, Fig. 1..

This invention relates to a new and improved caster for the legs of furniture, light furniture, or such as have small legs that will not admit of large rods being inserted in them.

The invention consists in having an oilchamber in the frame of the caster-wheel, into which the lower part of a rod that is driven into the leg is fitted, and on which rod the frame of the caster-wheel is allowed to turn freely, the rod being provided with a cap vwhich covers the oil-chamber, and a springcatch employed to hold the caster-wheel frame on the rod, as hereinafter fully set forth. To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a cylind ical rod, on which, nearits lower end, there is a circular plate, B, having an annular concentric groove, a, in its lower surface. This rod A is `driven snugly in the lower end ot the leg, a hole of proper size being bored to receive it, and the upper surface of the plate B bears against the bottom ot' the leg, as shown in Fig. 2.

C represents a frame, in which the casterwheel I) is fitted and allowed to rotate freely, and in this frame C there is a chamber, E, designed as a receptacle for oil, and also to reeeive the lower part of the rod A, the oilchamber being of cylindrical form and of such diameter as to admit of the frame C turning freely upon it without any lateral play.

On the upper part of the frame C, around the oil-chamber E, there is an upright annular ange, b, which, when the lower part of the rod A is tted in the oil-chamber, is covered by the plate B, the flange b fitting in the groove a. (See Fig. 2.) This plate B serves as a cover for the oil-chamber, preventing dust and dirt from entering therein.

In the lower part of the rod A, below the plate, there is made circumferentially a groove, c, into which a pin, cl, projects. This pin d is fitted in a hole, e, made horizontally in the upper part of' the frame C, said hole being drilled into the frame C from its outer side, and having a shoulder, f, near its inner end for the head of the pin to bear against. In the pin hole e there is placed a spiral spring, g, which bears against the head of the pin and keeps the outer end of the same in the groove c in the rod A, the spring g being retained in the hole e by a plug, h, in its outer end, as shown in Fig. 2. The pin d prevents the frame C from slipping off from the rod A, in case the leg is raised from the tloor, and the frame C is allowed to turn freely on the rod A.

By this arrangement the frame C of the caster-wheel will always be allowed to turn freely on the rod A, as the lower part of the latter will be always properly lubricated in consequence of being tted in the oil-chamber E, and the caster may be applied to quite small legs, as the rod A does not require to be of very great diameter. No nails or screws are required to secure the caster to the leg. It may therefore be very readily applied to the leg and easily detached therefrom, as the pin d will yield and be forced out from the groove c by pulling gently on frame C.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The oil-ehamber E in the frame C of the casterwheel D, in combination with the rod A. secured in the leg to which the casterwheel is applied, and fitted in the oil-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the rod A and oilchamber E, the yielding pin d, fitted in the frame C, and the groove o in the rod A, for the purpose specified.

3. The plate B on the rod A, provided with an annular groove, a, in its under side, in combination with the ilange b at the upper end ofthe oil-chamber E, as and for the purpose herein set fort-h.
