IMPROVED CASTER.
T0 aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN KNrsELY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Casters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ol the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view ot' my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line x Fig. l.

This invention relatts to a new and improved caster, such as are used on piano legs and on the legs of furniture generally.
The object of the invention is to obtain a caster of the 'kind specied which will admit of being readily attached to its leg, be capable of turning easily, and one which will admit of always being kept in a properly-lubricated state, and not liable to slip out from the leg in case of the piece of furniture being raised from the floor, as hereinafter fully set forth.
- To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a tube, which may be of cylindrical form and provided with a flange, a, atits lower and open end. This tube may be of malleable cast-iron or any other suitable metal, and it is fitted in the leg to which the caster is to be attached by simply boring a hole of proper diameter longitudinally into the lower' end ofthe leg and driving the tube snugly into the hole until the flange a comes in con. tact with the lower end of the leg, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, in which the leg is shown in red.
B represents a metal rod of cylindrical form, which is secured longitudinally and concentrically in the tube A, the upper end of the rod B being fastened to the upper end of the tube A, as shown in Fig 2. The lower end of the rod B is flush with the lower end of the rod A, and the rod is considerably less in diame ter than the interior of the tube A, in order to admit of a space between them to receive a cylindrical tube, C, having at its lower end a frame, D, of the usual form, in which a wheel, E, is fitted and allowed to turn freely.
The cylindrical tube C is an oil chamber, and the lower end ofthe rod B rests upon its bottom.
On the exterior ofthe tube C, near its lower end, there is made circumferentiall y a groove, b, to receive a pin, I", which is litted in a hole made horizontally in the flange (t of the tube A, as shown in Fig. 2. This pin-hole is drilled into the tlange ay from its outerI side, a shoulder, e, being at the inner part of the hole, for the head ofthe pin to bear against, and a spiral spring, d, being placed in the hole at the outer end of the pin, which pin is retained in place bya plug, e, inserted in the outer entl ofthe pinhole.
The spring d has a tendency to keep the inner end ofthe pin F in the groove b, but the latter is not sufficiently deep to prevent the tube C being 4pulled out from the tube A by a moderate effort. At the same time the pin F will hold the tube C in A in case of the leg being raised from the floor.
By this simple arrangement the caster is prevented from casually dropping from the leg in case the latter be raised from the floor, and at the same time the tube C may, when required, be very readily drawn out from A, andv C allowed at all times to turn freely in A, the free turning of C in A beinginsured in consequence of C being supplied with oil or other proper lubricating material.
It will be seen that all screws are dispensed with for securing the caster to the leg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The two tubes A C in combination with the rod B, caster-wheel E, and with or without the yielding pin F and groove b', all arranged substantially as and for the purpose h ere set forth.
