UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED S. HEATH, OF EPSOIVL'NEW HAMPSHIRE.
vFouNfl-AlN-PEN.
SPECIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,684, dated March 178, 1890.
Application iiled March 23, 1889 To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED S. HEATH, a citi. zen of the United States, residing at Epsom, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful ,Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a fountain-pen with a flexible tip capable of taking the place of an ordinary pen, which must be attached thereto.
The invention will'be clearly understood by reference ,to the accompanying drawings,
'forming a part of the following specification and claims, of Which- Figure l is a broken elevation showing the top side of the pen. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing the pen inside view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional `viewshowing the interior arrangement of my improved penpoint. Fig. 4' is a view of the open end of t-he pen-point detached from the reservoir or barrel. r`
Similar letters indicate like parts. My improved pen-point A, I form conical for about two-thirds its length, more or less, the balance being cylindrical, and in the conical portion are formed the slots B B, located at opposite sides, which divides the top part a from the` bottom` partl a', and in A the top part ct is formed a slot B. These several slots, in connection with a valve C, to be hereinafter explained, serve the ink to the paper when the pen is in use. The slotted portion a of the pen-point A is prefably made slightly longer than is the portion a', for a purpose also to be vhereinafter set forth.
The valve C is made tapering to corre-- Serial Naf 305,612. (No model.)
a stem c, which is threaded to a threaded I opening in al disk D, having perforations d.
for the passage of ink from thehandle'or inkreservoirfE, to which the pen-point A may be threaded in the usual way, as at e, Fig. 3. The disk Dis turned a snug fit for that part of the pen-point in which it is placed, and it may rest upon a" shoulder a2, as seen in Fig.
3. When the said point A is removed from the handle E, the disk and valve, by means parts a a of the pen-point Awithout spread- ,Y
ing open the slots B B. Then the pen-point mayV be placed upon the ink-reservoir or handle E, when the improved pen is ready' for use.
Bythe action of the extending points of the part a upon the paper, thus spreading the p slots B, ink is allowed to pass the valve C,
and by varying the pressure of the pen upon the paper the slot B is accordingly spread open, and a coarse or fine lineis the result.
Having described my improvements, What'I claim, and desire to-secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a fountain-pen, a pen-point formed conical and having slots, as shown, and provided interiorly with an adjustable valve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In-a fountain-pen, a conical pen-point slotted as shown, and having its upper part `slightly longer than its lower part, and an adjustable valve fitting the interior ofsaid slotted portion, substantially as and for the purpose specified. p 1
In testimony whereof I aiiixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
