Description
(No Model!) 0. P. SOWERS. STAVE JOINTBR Patented Mar. 18, 1890.
1 WHIHHN UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC ONI PINCKNEY SOVVERS, OF STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
STAVE-JOINTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,498, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed October 9, 1889- Serial No. 326,460. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ONI PINOKNEY SowERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Statesville, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Stave-Jointer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stave-jointers; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be exceedingly simple in construction, and by means of which the operation of jointing the staves may be speedily and effectively performed.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved stavejointer. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
.Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all thefigures.
My invention, which relates to that class of stave jointers in which the staves are trimmed by means of a circular saw, relates mainly to the construction of the carriage upon which the stave is mounted and the track whereby the carriage is guided. The said track consists of a segmental cleat 1, which is suitably mounted upon the sawtable and which may be the segment of a circle of any desired diameter, according to the size of the stave which is to be operated upon.
The carriage consists of a platform 3, the under side of which has a segmental groove 4, adapted to fit upon the track 1, whereby the carriage is guided in the proper direction. The platform of the carriage is provided on its upper side with a pair of curved brackets 5 5, adapted to support the stave which is to be operated upon, and it has at its rear end a block 6, against which the rear end of the stave may abut, so as to prevent the longitudinal displacement during operation. Upon the upper side of the platform of the carriage are mounted a pair of arms or levers 7 7, the outer ends of which have upturned brackets 8 and the innerends of which are provided with slots 9. A bracket 10, extending laterally from the center of the platform, is provided with a transverse slot 10*, and a bolt 12 extends vertically through the slots 10* and 9, and is provided at its upperend with a thumb-nut 11, which may be tightened, so as to secure the arms or levers projecting edge will be trimmed off the stave,
which latter is then reversed and the operation repeated, so as to trim the other edge. The stave is then ready for use.
It will be seen that by means of my improved jointer staves of any width may be trimmed in an exceedingly simple and convenient manner.
The device will operate successfully in all kinds of lumber, and knots or burls in the wood will not interfere with the operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
The combination, with the carriage having the-curved brackets on its upper side, of the pivoted arms or levers having upturned outer ends and slotted inner ends, a slotted bracket extending laterally from the carriage, a connecting bolt and thumb-nut, and a block mounted at the rear end of ,said carriage, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ONI PINOKNEY SOWERS. Witnesses:
E. B. WATTS, J AMES B. ARMFIELD.
