SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,151, dated March 11, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE LEWIS I-IANN, of Beverly, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Easels, of which the fol lowing is a specification.

My invention is an improved easel, and seeks particularly to provide a Simple construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the easel may be folded compactly when not in use, and may be secured by a single latch or fastening.

The invention has for further objects other improvements; and it consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective View of my easel open ready for use. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the easel closed. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the bracket, also showing the supporting-hook therefor on one of the easel-legs. Figsxi and 5 are detail views illustrating the clamp of the work-support. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of my improved easel. Fig. 7 is a detail view, part in section, of a portion of the work-support folded. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the upper end of the easel folded; and Fig. 9 is a detail view representing the board for use in writing or drawing.

The front legs A A and the rear leg B, together with the head-plate O, constitute what may be termed the main frame of' the easel, such parts being usually connected so that the legs A A may move outwardly from each other and the rear leg move rearwardly, as shown. To limit the movement of the rear leg, I so hinge it to the head-plate that in its rearmostposition it abuts such head-plate and is so stopped. The outward movement of the front legs is limited by clip-plates A having one arm secured to the legs and their other arms lapped in rear of the head-plate and slotted at a to receive the studs a such construction serving to limit the outward movement of legs A A.

The position of the legs and such determined and fixed position of the legs secures the holding of the bracketplate in a true horizontal plane or level, so that artists materials put thereon may not be displaced. \Vhen desired, pins or spurs may be provided in the lower end of the legs to steady them in position.

In the construction shown and as is preferred the legs are hinged or pivoted to the head-plate C, in the top of which is provided a pin 0. To the plate O,near its lower end, I secure hooks c c, which form keepers to receive the edge of the bracket-plate presently described.

To one of the legs, usually leg A, as shown, I secure a hook-like pin or stud a, the point of which proj ects inwardly, as shown, and such stud when the legs are closed is arranged a short distance above the keeper formed by hooks c. The leg A has near its lower end a dowel a, which enters a socket in the lnner edge of the leg A when legs A A are closed, and braces such legs together. The legs AA are also provided with rearwardly-pro3ected dowels D D and E E, and the leg B has sockets d, to receive the dowelsD when the legs are closed, and in such position of the parts the legB fits between dowels E. These sockets and dowels form interlockingdevices when the legs are closed, so that by providing a latch F on leg A to project over leg B and secure this leg in contact with the legs A A the several legs will be firmly fastened together.

I form or provide a shoulder or projection G, and a pin 9 projects from the side of the leg B and toward the outer edge of leg A. This shoulder and pin G g serve to reta1n the work-support when the device is folded up, in the manner more fully described hereinafter. 1

On the rear side of leg A, I secure eyes II H which receive the restrod 11*, such rod being inserted at its upper end up through eye H until its lower end can enter eye H, and it is removed in a manner the reverse of that just described. A. portion of the headplate 0 projects at h across the line of eye H and above the same, in the closed position of the legs forming a stop projection by which to secure the rod in the eyes H H.

The work-supportthat is, the support for the canvas or plaque being painted-hasa main bar I and an upright bar I pivoted to the main bar at the center of the latter. In operative position the bar I fits at its upper end between the upper hinged ends of legs A A being steadied thereby, and the bar I may be secured in such position by the latch A as shown. It will be seen, that the upright bar is fitted in operative position between the legs of the easel and is of the same thickness as said legs. By reason of such construction a canvas supported on the easel in position to be painted on will have a bearing against both the frontlegs as well as the uprights, and consequently be steadily supported and may be firmly secured in position by the means herein described.

The main bar I has on its under side baillike loops I I to fit on pins J J, which enter sockets or openings j in the legs A A. Such pins J have at their inner ends transverse openings for wires or pins t', by which the pins J are held in legs A A. The loops I being elongated in the direction of length of bar I permit the pins J J to pass through the loops at any adjustment of working-bar I between the bottom and top sockets or openings of legs A A. On the upright bar I, I provide a clamp K, which is movable along the bar I and has a screw it, by which itmay be secured in any adjustment- This clamp has in its under side slats or grooves K, which serve-to receive the edge of a circular or other like plaque, and together with groove K in the main barI secure such device firmly in position.

By preference I provide two slots or grooves in the clamp and two grooves in the bar I one pair for large and the other pair for small plaques. I also prefer to provide such bar I with an upwardly-projected cleat or ledge'at its front edge, as shown.

To more firmly secure the work-support, I prefer to provide a hook M,which is engaged Then by by one of the loops I when the parts are folded. The bracket N has bottle-rests n and is provided with a brush-holder O, pivoted at one end to the bracket and provided with a latch-pin 0, which enters coincident holes in the bracket and holder and secures the holder in position for use, or when such holder is turned within the area of the bracket-plate. It will be noticedthat the holder when not 'in use may be turned within the area of the bracket-plate- Near one edge of the bracket I provide a block P, having an opening "fitted to receive the pin 0 of the head-plate. An eye or opening Q is provided near the lower edge of the bracket in position to receive the hook-like pin or stud a. To the rear side of the bracket plate I hinge at one end a leg or red R, which may be turned-against the bracket-plate and be secured by a button 7", or be turned out therefrom to serve as a leg to support the bracket. Near its end, opposite the connection of leg R, the bracket has a notch to fit the corner of one of legs A A, and a socket s to receive a hook-like pin S, secured to said leg, and to the leg above the hook S, I pivot a turn-button S, which may be turned to securely fasten the bracket on pin S.

The adjustment of the leg R for use will be readily understood from the drawings. The board T may be used as a drawing-board for writingor for holding work to be paint-ed, such board in the latter instance being set up on the work-support similar to a plaque. For use as a writing-table the board T has its hooks 2f engaged over the clamp K, the latter being lowered close to the bar I and secured, and by raising or lowering the clamp the angle of the writing-board may be varied. This board may be used in carrying drawings and the like by strapping such objects thereto,

The front legs are provided withrings or screw-eyes V for the attachment of a carrying-strap WV, having snap-hooks 10, which strap may be connected with said rings or screw-eyes, and passed over the shoulder in carrying the easel on out-door trips, or may be left hanging from the rings or screw-eyes of one of the front legs when the easel is in use. v

Having thus described. my invention, what I claim as new is '1. An easel comprising the front and rear legs foldable together, and having interlocks ing devices, substantially as described, the bracket, the work-support, connections for securing such bracket and work-support to the easel-frame, and a latch for securing such parts to the easel-frame when the easel is folded, such latch being supported on a part of the easel, substantially as set forth.

2. In an easel, the combination of the front and rear legs foldable together,sockets being provided in the front face of the rear leg, both the front legs being provided with rearwardly-projected dowels to enter said sockets and the rear leg being adjusted in the folded position of the parts against the rear side of the front legs, and the latch or fastening whereby to hold such rear leg against the rear side of the front legs, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the main easelframe having a pin or stud at its upper end, of the bracket having an openingor socket fitted to engage said pin or stud, and a fastening for securing such parts in engagement, substantially as set forth.

4. In an easel, the work-support having its main .bar provided with groove K and having an upright bar and a clamp K thereon, such clamp having a slot or groove K, substantially as set forth.

provided with interlocking devices, the latch or fastening for securing said legs with the interlocking devices in engagement, the bracket and fastenings for securing the bracket to the head-plate when the parts are folded, substantiallyas set forth.

6. In an easel, the combination, with the main frame having its front legs hinged or pivoted at its upper end and slightly separated at such end, of the work-support having an upright bar fitted at its upper end between the hinged ends of the front legs, substantially as set forth.

7. In an easel, the combination of the main frame, pins connected therewith for holding the work-support, and the work-support hav-' ing its main bar provided on itsunder side with loops adapted to receive such pins, said loops being elongated in the direction of length of said main bar, substantially as set forth.

8. lhe combination, with the easel-frame having a keeper for receiving the bracket, and

having one of its legs provided with a hook or stud, of the bracket fitted to engage the keeper, and having an eye or opening to receive the hook or stud of the easel-leg when the said leg is closed, whereby to secure the plate in the keepers when the easel is closed or folded, substantially as set forth.

9. The combination, in an ease], with the legs, one of which has eyes formingreceivers for the rest-rod, of a stop projection which extends in the closed position of the easel across the line of one of said eyes, whereby to secure the rest-rod therein, substantially as set forth. 1 i

10. lhecombinaiion, with the main easelframe having receptacles, as L, for the workbarsupporting pins, of the work support-and means for securing the work-support to the main frame, with a portion of saidwork-support arranged to rest close above the said receptacle when the easel is closed, substantially as set forth.

11. The combination of the front legs, one of which has a lateral shoulder, the rear leg having a lateral pin, the work-support having an opening to receive the lateral pin of the rear leg and formed to fit between said leg and lateral shoulder in the closed position of the parts, and a fastening for securing the legs in 'closed position, substantially as set forth.

12. The work-support for easels herein described, consisting of the main bar, the upright bar pivoted thereto, and the Work-clamp,

all substantially as and for the purposes specified.

:13. In an easel, the combination, with a bracket-plate, of a brush-holder pivoted thereto and adjustable when not in use within the area of the said bracket-plate, substantially as set forth.

14. In an easel, the combination of the head-plate, the front and rear legs hinged thereto, and the clip-plates A secured to the front legs and having arms or portions lapped in rear of the head-plate and slotted at a and the studs passed through said slots into the head-plate,substantially as set forth.
