Description

(No Model.)
E. WERNER.
EASEL.
Patented Mar. 4, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL WERNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No- 422,673, dated March 4, 1890.
Application filed October 9; 1889. Serial No. 326,375. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL VVERNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Easels, which improvement 1s fully set forth in thefollowing specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an easel provided with means for holding the prop thereof in ad usted position.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of an easel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical sec-' tion thereof. Fig. 3 represents aperspective view of the easel on a reduced scale. Fig. 4t pepresents a perspective view of a modificaion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an easel formed of a head B, the side legs 0, and prop D, said legs 0 being pivoted to the leaf E of the hinge, which connects the prop to the head. The other leaf F of the hinge is provided with a head whose upper end is formed with notches or recesses, producinga segmental rack H, which is mounted on the bolt G, j ournaledin the ears G onthelowerpart of the leaf E, andwhich may be engaged by a catch J, mounted on the said leaf E. It will be seen that when the catch is raised it clears the rack H, whereby the prop may be set out the desired extent in order to impart a proper angle to the easel, after which said catch is lowered, so as to drop into the rack below it, and thus interlock with the proper tooth thereof, by which provision the prop is controlled and retains its adjusted position, it being evident that when the catch is again raised the prop may be folded within the legs 0 and again locked, if so desired.
In lieu of the segmental rack H, openings may be formed in the head F to receive a spring, bolt, or pin for locking the same, as, shown in Fig. 4.
In order to guide and support the lowerend of the catch when in engaging position with the head F, the leaf E is formed with shoulders K, which occupy positions on the sides of the head adjacent to the rack H, so that when the catch is lowered it drops into engagement with the teeth of the rack and likewise with said shoulders K, thus relieving the catch of strain when the prop is in operative position.
I am aware that it is not new to construct an easel-stand having legs or supports pivotally connected and provided with mechanism for securing the same man adjusted position; but I am not aware that a construction as herein described is old, wherein the side pieces and head are connected to one of the leaves of a hinge so that the side pieces are adapted to be swung outward from the opposite sides of the head, the other support being attached to the other leaf, which latteris pivotally connected, as described, and adapted to be engaged by a catch, so as to be held in fixed position relatively to the other leaf.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the head B, with side pieces 0, and a hinge having a leaf E secured to said head, and having the side pieces 0 pivotally secured to it, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the head B, the side supporting pieces or legs 0, and a hinge, the latter having the leaf E secured to said head, the side pieces being secured to the said leaf, and a leaf F, secured to a third supporting piece or leg adapted to swing between said first-mentioned side pieces, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the head B, supporting side supporting-pieces O, a third support, and a hinge with latch, the hinge consisting of two leaves E F, the former having ears serving as bearing for the pivotal pin of the hinge and provided with the shoulders K, the leaf F, having an upper portion adapted to swing in a recessed portion of the leaf Eand be engaged by the said latch, substantially as described. I
4. The combination of the head B, supporting-pieces, and a hinge having one of its leaves provided with ears, shoulders, and a latch, the other leaf having a segmental rack adapted to work in a recess in said first leaf and head and be engaged by said'latch, substantially as described.
EMIL WERNER.
