BOTTLE-ENVELOPE.

SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,366, dated March 4, 1890;

Application filed October 29, 1889. Serial No. 328,571. (No model.) I

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFRED GEORGE 4 BEALE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Tunbridge Wells, in the county of Kent, England, have invented a Bottle-Envelope, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to lthe accompanying drawings.

The object of this invention is to supersede the use of wrapping-paper for bottles containing medicine, scent, or other liquids or objects, and to substitute Jtherefor acheaper, neater, and more expeditiously-applied means for wrapping up bottles. I make it in the form of an envelope, which is closed at the bottle-mouth or stopper end, where it is tapered down to smaller dimensions, and which can be closed at the other end by means of a covering-ldap.

I make the envelope, by preference, of paper joined together by gum or other suitable adhesive material, as is usual with envelopes; or in some cases it may be made of gelatine or other suitable sheet material, and I provide the tongue part of the closing-flap with gum or other suitable adhesive material for closing it with; or I may use any other suitable means for fixing the flap upon the envelope when closing it; or I make the envelope of paper-pulp pressed up in a mold, the flap being of the same material, or of paper gummed or otherwise fixed thereto.

The envelope is made in various sizes and forms to suit the size and general contour of the bottles. It is made by hand or by any suitably-adapted envelope machinery.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of an envelope in the folded-up form for transmission or storage. Eig. 2 shows it applied to a bottle, and Fig. 3 is a top plan View.

The envelope-blank, having been eut outto the required shape for the finished article, is folded over and gummed togethernfor instance, along the seams a, b b, and c, Fig. 1. The flap d, which I preferably form integral with the envelope, though it may be formed separately and gummed or otherwise attached thereto, as before stated, has a portion d', which has such shape as will nearly correspond to that which the opening at the bottom of the envelope will assume when the bottle has been inserted, so that when the iiap is folded over said opening said portion d will serve to entirely close the same, and thus form a bottom for the envelope. The flap CZ is also provided with a tongue d2,

which, after being gummed, renders the envelope ready for use. The bottle can then be put into it, as shown in Fig. 2, and the flap folded over and the gummed tongue part d2 caused to adhere to the envelope; or the tongue part may be without gum and be made to adhere by means of sealing-wax or by other suitable means.

I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent isd l. The herein-described bottleenvelope, the upper portion of which is tapered and closed and the lower portion of which is open at its bottom for the insertion of a bottle, and a flap attached to or formed integral with the envelope, a portion of said flap having a configuration corresponding somewhat to that assumed by the opening at the lower end of the envelope when a bottle has been inserted, said portion being adapted to entirely close said opening and form of itself a bottom for the envelope when the flap has been folded, as described, and another portion of said flap being formed into a tongue which is adapted to be sealed to the side of the envelope, as set forth.

The herein-described bottle-1 envelope, the same being gummed along the seams a b b o, whereby the body of the envelope is closed and the iiap at the lower portion of the envelope attached thereto or formed integral therewith, said iiap being adapted to fold over the lower open end of the envelope, and to form when so folded a bottom for the latter, and the gummed tongue portion cl2 of said flap adapted to be sealed to the side of the envelope when the flap is foldedin the manner described.
