SHIELD FOR SAFETY-PINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,720, dated February 18, 1890,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL JENKINS, of Mont clair,in thecounty of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Shields for Safety-Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to theconstruction of the shield or guard. of that class of safetypins having a central partition in the shield, and has for its object to simplify and cheapen the cost thereof.
It consists in a central partition, which is made integral with the central inner end of the shield to project therefrom between its infolded lateral edges, and whose free edge next to the bar of the pin is held fast by the proximate edges of the shield, which are clamped in thereon, all substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved safety-pin shield is struck up; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the shield struck up from the blank; Fig. 3, a cross-section thereof in line 00 a: of Fig. 2 Fig. 4:, a side elevation of a pin constructed with the improved head, and Fig. 5 a cross-section thereof in line yy of Fig. 4:. r
The blank A of which the shield is formed is cut out of sheet metal, in the shape substantially as shown in Fig. 1viz., with a main body a, enlarged in the usual manner at each end by terminal offsets b b b 17, adapted when the main plate is properly folded to project toward the middle of the shield and clamp the bar D of the pin on one side and form the sides of the hood on the other, and with a central wing c, projecting from the middle of one edge of the main plate a in a wedge shape, with its narrower end connected to the main plate. The blank A, of the form described, is then struck up between suitable dies, by which the body a is folded longitudinally along its middle line 22, and at the same time doubled or bent into a U shape, so that its ends, bearing the offsets b b b b, are brought opposite each other to form parallel outer lines, with the offsets projecting inwardly from each to embrace between them the central wing c, which is left projecting centrally in its original form to the bend of the shield, the inner curved end of the shield and the two offsets b 19, between which the bar is laid, are closed in and clamped upon the bar to firmly secure the shield thereto, and at the same time the central wing c is brought to a central plane coincident withthe longitudinal axis of the bar,and the edge thereof, which is'proximate to the infolded offset 6 b clamping the bar, is caught and held fast between the outer edges of said offsets,as shown in Fig. 5. The
opposite offsets b b are left open to form the;
hood or pocket to receive and guard the point E of the pin, and the pin is guided from either side into the hood by the central partition formed by the wing c, said partition being preferably made of a width to extend up into the hood far enough to prevent the pin from passing over its edge within the hood from one side to the other. As the end of the wing or partition 0 which projects into the hood formed by the offsets b b is .left free and unconfined, it will, by reason of its elasticity, readily yield and bend from its normal central position under a lateral pressure exerted thereon, and will thereby permit of the en trance and lodgment of the pin in the hood on either side of said partition.
The construction of the shield with theinner partition-plate integral therewith to project centrally from its inner bend, so that the entire device may 'be struck up at one blow,
reduces largely the cost of manufacturing safety-pins having a central guiding-partition in the shield, while the shield itself is lighter and neater in appearance than the shields of this class as heretofore constructed.
I claim as my invention 1. The improved blank for the shield of a safety-pin, formed, substantially as described, with a wing projecting with diverging sides from the middle of one edge of that portion of the blank of which the body of the shield is to be formed 2. The shield for a safety-pin, constructed of a blank of substantially the form herein described, bent into shape to produce a partition extending centrally from the bend of the shield between the two sides thereof, and which is held on one edge between the infolded sides embracing the bar of the pin, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, in a s-afetypin, with its bar and point, of a shield made of a single piece of metal, formed, as described, with a Wing projecting centrally from one edge of the main body thereof at a right angle therescribing Witnesses.
