P. DE Y. CATTLE ER. No. 421,680; Patented Feb. 18, 1890.

Pa a2 (7%? UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
PAUL DE NAGY, OF SZEPEZD, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
CATTLE-MA RKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,680, dated February 18, 1890.
Application filed March 1, 1889. Serial No. 301,719. (No model.) Patented in Austria-Hungary January 28, 1888, No. 53,300 and No. 46,945; in Belgium December 3, 1888, No. 84,166, and in France December 4, 1888, No. 194,575.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL DE NAGY, a sub vject of the Emperor of Austria, King of Hun- 46,945; in Belgium December 3, 1888, No.
84,156, and in France December 4, 1888, N0. 194,57 5,) of which the following is a specification. v
In large ranches the practice prevails to a great or less extent on the part of the keepers of exchanging single heads of the flocks, especially of sheep and swine, whereby inferior cattle are substituted for those of superior breeds. Attempts have been made to prevent such abuses by marking the animals, and this is effected for sheep and hogs by making incisions in the flap of the ear; but this system of marking is neither durable nor reliable.
The object of the present invention is to secure the best results in this respect, and it is confidently believed that it will give a marking device in an equal degree reliable and durable.
In order to make my invention more clearly understood I have shown in the accompanying drawings a means for carrying the same into practical effect.
' In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of one portion. of a marking device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of said parts united. Fig. i is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is an end view of one of said parts.
The invention consists of two pieces of hard caoutchouc, one of which A is provided with a threaded trunnion a, While in the other piece B is arranged a hole 5, threaded in a corresponding way, as shown in annexed drawings.
The mark is applied in the following manner: A hole is made in the flap of the ear of the animal, and the threaded caoutchouc trunnion is passed through this hole after havingbeen dipped in a solution of caoutchouc, or in liquid white Russian glue. Said trunnion is then screwed into the tapped hole of the second piece, which firmly unites the two parts of the marking device. The solution of caoutchouc or the liquid known as white Russian glue will cause the two pieces of caoutchouc to stick together in. such a way that a subsequent unscrewing is entirely out of question.
On the face of the device the name of the proprietor or the year can be easily indicated, as shown in Fig. 5.
The device might be applied not only for marking animals, but it might be used also as a mark for shipments of merchandise if the exterior shape of the package should ad-- mit of its application.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A marking device consisting of two pieces of caoutchouc, one of which is provided with a threaded trunnion and the other with a tapped hole, said marking device being adapted to be applied by passing the screw-threaded trunnion through a hole made in the flap of the ear of an. animal, for example, and then screwing the trunnion of the first piece into the tapped hole of the other.
piece after having dipped the trunnion in a solution of caoutchouc or liquid whiteRussian glue, substantially as set forth.
2. A marking device for stock, consisting of a piece A of caoutchouc provided with a catingcharacters, and said screw-threads being permanently united by a cement consisting of a solution of caoutchouc, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL DE NAGY.
