Description

L E m W AM H m AT A E L (No Model.)
Patentd Feb. 11,1890.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANGUS J. DARRAGH, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
LEATHER-STUFFING WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 421,249 dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed July 2'7, 1889. Serial No. 318,831. (No model.)
To aZl whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANGUS J. DARRAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Stuffing WVheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention has relation to wheels designed and adapted for use in the process of stuffing and improving leather; and it consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a stuffingwheel embodying my improvements. Fig.
, is an end View of the same.
A designates the stuffing-wheel, consisting of a cylindrical hollow chest. The walls and head of the wheels are double, the cylindrical portions being concentric and the heads parallel. The inner shell D is perforated at c for the passage or circulation of hot water, heated air, or steam from the end spaces F to the annular spaces G. The steam, water, or heated air enters the heating-spaces through the journals II I of the wheels, which are made tubular, as shown, for the passage of water, steam, or heated air by branch pipes 71. i, the former being the inlet and the latter the outlet or exhaust. The course of the water, steam, or heated air is indicated by arrows, being first introduced. into the spaces between the two heads S T on one side of the wheel, then by way of the perforations c in the inner cylindrical shell D to the annular space 0 around the latter, thence to the space between the heads S T in the opposite side, and finally out by way of the exhaustpipe 2'.
The stuffing=wheel may be constructed of wood, iron, or other suitable material; but I find itconvenient to build it in the general form of a wooden cask. The inner and outer walls of the cylindrical body are formed of staves bound together with iron hoops.
In building the wheel both inner and outer heads are sunk into the inner cylinder and hooped with galvanized-iron hoops. Wooden hoops of the thickness of the steam cylinder are then put on the ends of the inner staves around the outer head. The outer staves are then put on and bound with iron hoops. The door 11 is in one end of the wheel, as shown, and closes an opening I, through which access is gained to the interior for filling or emptying.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a leather-stuffing wheel, the combination, with the inner cylinder D, constituting the receptacle for the skins and provided with the double heads S T, of the outer concentric cylinder A, supported by and upon the inner cylinder, the said cylinders, with the heads S T, constituting a hollow or double walled chest, the inner cylinder being perforated around the space inclosed by its heads for the passage and circulation of the heatingfiuid, and being provided with hollow journals on opposite sides, through which pass steam or hot-air pipes for the entrance and exhaust of the steam or other heating-fluid, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of July, 1889.
A. .I. DARRAGH.
