UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
FREDERICK N. TROLL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CQORPSE-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,533, dated September 2, 1873; application lerl J une 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK N. TROLL, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Ice- Oasket, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section.
The invention relates to burialcaskets for preserving the bodies of deceased persons un til it is convenient for their friends to bury them. It consists in providing between the body-receptacle and casket a pipe-connection through which the air may be exhausted. It consists, also, in applying a rubber lining to the inside of casket and cover to exclude all air from the outside.
1n the drawing, A represents a wooden casket, and B the cover, both of which are lined on the inside with rubber to more eEectually exclude the air. C is the false bottom, perforated and provided with transverse supports. D is the metallic body receptacle, whichis connected, by a rubber pipe, d, with the casket A. This pipe has a tube, d1, that passes therethrough, being provided on the outside with a stopper, d2.
By this means an airpump may be employed, and the air entirely exhausted from thc body-receptacle after the cover has been fastened down. The quantum of oxygen necessary to putrefaction being thus removed,
and a resupply being prevented by the rubber lining, decomposition is effectually arrested. The ice is made to occupy the space between the casket A and the body-receptacle D, while the water therefrom passes through the perforations in false bottom. 4
The cover B has a subjacent ice-chamber, b, which has an inlet, b1, and also Wateroutlet pipes b2, that connect with the apertures d3 of the body-receptacle D. The ice-chamber b comes directly over the breast and stomach of the body-that is to say, over those parts in which decomposition begins.
The proper degree of temperature and the proper supply of oxygen-the two essential conditions of putrefaction-bein g thus effectually prevented, my casket will preserve thc body in a perfect condition until'the burial takes place, although that may be deferred for a considerable length of time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A body-receptacle, D, provided with the rubber pipe d, tube d1, and stopper d2, extending through the casket A, so that the air may be exhausted, in the manner described.
2. The casket A- and cover B, lined on the inside with rubber to exclude the air, in the manner set forth.
FREDK. N. TROLL.
