UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN A. TI-IROCKMORTON, OF SIDNEY, OHIO.
ARTIFICIAL DENTU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,116, dated February 11, 1890. Application filed January 6,1890. Serial No. 336,099- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. THRooKMoR- TON, of Sidney, county of Shelby, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Removable Bridge-Work for Artificial Dentures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the means for holding the artificial teeth in the mouth; andit consistsin providing the bridge-work with arms to clasp the bridgework to the natural teeth, and with a supporting plate or clasp to clasp over the alveolar process or gums.
In a patent granted to me June 28, 1887, N 0. 365,764, a whole or partial plate of artificial teeth was described, provided with clasps for holding it to the alveolar process and gums.
In the present invention the full plate is dispensed with, the clasping-plates are attached in substantially the same manner as shown in the patent referred to, and additional clasping-arms are provided for attachment to the natural teeth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a piece of removable bridge-work for the right lower jaw. Fig. 2 is a view of a piece of removable bridge-work for the lower left side. Fig. 3 shows a piece for the left upper side, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the clasping-plate.
A represents a piece of removable bridgework, made of any suitable material. Connected to these plates are the metal clasps or plates B, constructed of gold or other suitable metal, as described in my former patent. To one or both ends of the piece of bridgework are attached the clasping-arms O, which clasp around the natural teeth.
As shown in the drawings, the claspingplates B for the upper-pieces of bridge-Work extend upward and are drawn over the alveolar processes or gums on the buccal side, while those for the lower pieces are secured to the lingual margin. The piece of bridgework can be formed of one or more teeth, as desired. This form of bridge-work is especially designed for cases Where there are natural teeth remaining in the mouth, the arms 0 holding the piece of bridge-work to the natural teeth and the clasping-plate B holding it to the alveolar process or gums and preventing any lateral movement.
The plate B and the clasping-arms C can be attached to the bridge-work in the manner described in my patent above referred to, or in any other suitable manner.
I am aware that clasping-arms to hold artificial teeth to the natural teeth are old but so far as I am aware such arms have never before been used in combination with a supporting-plate clasping over the alveolar process or gums.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The removable bridge-Work for artificial dentures, substantially as herein described and shown, provided with clasping-arms for attachment to the natural teeth, and with a clasping plate 01' plates extending from the inner or outer margin of the bridge-work and adapted to clasp over the alveolar processes or gums, as set forth.
JOHN A. THROCKMORTON.
