My invention relates to attaching devices for use in attaching removable dentures to permanent teeth and has for its object to provide a device in which a minimum amount of wear occurs ture in mastication caused by the yielding of the gum tissue on which the denture is supported.
Another object of the invention resides in providing an attaching device comprising a flange with a web issuing outwardly therefrom in providing wing-like portions on said flange disposed on either side of said web with- 15 a cylindrical post secured to said web and parallel with said flange, and in further providing a slit sleeve adapted to embrace said post and slide freely thereon together with shoulders disposed along the edges of said sleeve formed by said slit and adapted to abut against said wing-likefportion.

In the use of removabledentures such as bridges, partial plates, etc, and particularly where the denture is supported upon gum tissue, considerable wear occurs on the at-' taching structure. This is particularly true with tube and post attaching members, such as are now in common use. My invention overcomes this objectional characteristic of such structures by providing shoulders on the sleeve or tubular member adapted to prevent rotational movement, and further adapted to co-operate with thepost flange to resist wear as the teeth are used in mastication.
For the purpose of illustrating the application of my invention I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a portion of-the human mandible 10 having incisors 11, cuspids 12 and bicuspids 18 and 14. In the particular specimen illustrated, the remaining teeth have been previously extracted to expose 15 and 16. I V Y Forthe purpose of supplying the lost teeth of the mandible indicated at 10, I have shown two partial plates 17 and'18 having bicuspids adapted to rest upon the gums 15 and 16 so as to take the place of the teeth previously extracted, the said plates 17 and. 18 being connected by a lingual band 22.
Theinvention proper consists of two attaching members which are attached to the permanent bicuspids 13 and 14 and the bicuspids 19 and 20 of the denture, and are shown in detail in Fig. 6. Theseattaching members each comprise a male member 31 and a female member 82 adapted to be connectedtogether to firmly support the structure attached thereto. v I flange 23 formed with a web 2 L issuing outwardly from the center of said flangeto provide wing- like portions 25 and 26 disposed to either side of said web. In the application of my invention to dentures,-the male member 31 and the female member 32 are preferably arranged in slight- 1y inclined direction with reference to the occlusal plane so that upon applying pressure to the denture in the mastication of food, the shoulders 30 are caused to bear upon the wing- like portions 25 and 26 of the flanges 23 as the gum tissue supporting the plates 17 and 18 yield. This brings all of the wear in the attaching member upon the said shoulders and flanges. Due to the width of the same, the wear is greatly minimized and the life of the structure is greatly prolonged.
lVith dentures such as shown in Fig. 3 a certain degree of oscillatory movement of each of the plates 17 and 18 occurs relative to the post 27 due to the lateral movement of the jaw occasioned in normal mastication. With the ordinary type of post attaching member, wear at the slit in the sleeve occurs very rapidly due to the fact that but a small area is presented to resist such oscillatory movement and due to the further fact that it is impossible to construct and maintain the edges of the sleeve infirm contact with. the web of the male member. With my invention, the
shoulders formed on the edges of the sleeve formed by the slit thereof are greatly reinforced and present appreciable surfaces which minimize thev wear and resist the 0s cillatory movement of the female member upon the male member.
For the purpose of compensating for whatever little wear occurs with my improved attaching member, I have constructed the shoulders 30 with a number of kerfs 33 in the edges of the same as best shown in Fig. 6 dividing the shoulder up into several individual sections 34 integrally .connected with the sleeve portions 28. WVith thisarrangement the individual sections can be separately clinched together to close the bore through the sleeve 28 and to further bring the shoulders 30 in contact with the flange 23. With this arrangement different portions of the said shoulders may be adjusted to cor respond with the degree of wear received by them so that the attaching member may at all times be maintained with the said shoulders in positive contact with the flanges of the male member throughout their extent-.1
My invention is highly meritorious in that 1 to one another to-compensate for the comaression of the gums during mastication, the thrust upon the members being taken up through the shoulders and flanges of sald members during such action. 1. In combination with a permanent tooth and a removable denture adjacent thereto and resting upon gum tissue of a flange secured to said permanent tooth, a post connected to said flange and parallel therewith, a slit sleeve secured to said removable denture and adapted to embrace said post, shoulders formed on said sleeve adapted to bear against said flange, said postand sleeve being inclined relative to the occlusal plane in such a direction as to cause said shoulders to bear against said flange upon occlusal movement of the removable denture relative to the permanent tooth occasioned by the yielding of i the gum tissue.
2. In combination with a permanenttooth and, a removable denture adjacent thereto and resting upon gum tissue, of a flange secured to said permanent tooth, a post com nected to said flange and parallel therewith, a slit sleeve secured to said removable denture and adapted to embrace said post, shoulders formed on said sleeve adapted to bear against said flange, said sleeve and post being free at both ends to permit of the free sliding of the one relative to the other, said post and sleeve being inclined relative to the occlusal plane in such a direction as to cause said shoulders to bear against said flange upon occlusal movement of the removable denture relative to the permanent tooth occasioned by the yielding of the gum tissue. 7
3. In combination with a permanent tooth and a removable denture adjacent thereto and resting upon gum tissue, a member secured to said permanent tooth, a second member secured to said denture and being able relative to said first member in a direction toward and from the gum, means for guiding said members throughout the movement thereof, said members being formed with bearing surfaces inclined relative to the direction of movement of said denture, to cause said bearing surfaces to receive the strain imparted to the denture upon occlusion so as to remove the strain from said guiding means.
