To all whom it may ooncern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs WALLACE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in toys, and has for its object to provide a wheeled toy so constructed that a pin-wheel, a figure, or other ornament will be revolved as the toy is drawn forward or pushed backward; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation on line a; as of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is aplan View; and Fig. 3 is a central Vertical section through the body of the toy, the drive-wheels, and a portion of the axle upon which the wheels are mounted.

The axle 10 is reduced in diameter at the extremities to provide the shoulders 11, the length of the reduced portions of the axle being greater at one end than at the other. At the center of the axle a circular opening is produced, surrounded at the top and bottom by a collar 12, said collar preferably constituting an integral portion of said axle, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Upon each reduced end of the axle a drive-wheel 13 is loosely mounted, the hubs of which drive-wheels contact with the shoulders 11, and upon the inner end of the hub of the wheel mounted upon the longer reduced end of the axle a pinion 14 is formed or attached. The pin-wheel 15, or other ornament to be revolved, is firmly secured to the upper surface of ablock 16, preferably provided with cylindrical sides, and to the under face of said block a spur-wheel'17 is horizontally secured, the teeth whereof ex-' tend perpendicularly downward to mesh with the pinion 14. The block 16 is mounted torevolve in the axle 10 by securing to the under face of the spur-Wheel 17 at the center a sleeve or post 18, of a diameter to loosely fit in the central opening of the axle. This sleeve or post extends below the lower collar 12 of the axle-opening, and is prevented from being Withdrawn from the opening by attaching to the lower end a band or ring 19, or screwing a nut thereon, as in practice may be found most desirable.

The ornament to be revolved, illustrated in the drawings, consists, as aforesaid, in a pin- 'wheel 15, and in connection with said pin- Wheel, when used, I preferably make use of a series of disks 20, painted or otherwise colored, of different diameters, and arranged one above the other, as best illustrated in Fig. 1; but I desire it to be distinctly understood that I do not confine myself to the specific ornament shown and described, as other ornaments may be substituted therefor without departing from the spirit of theinvention.

To the front of the axle 10, at that portion in which the opening is made, a socket 21, of any approved construction, is secured, and in said socket a handle 22 is introduced.

In operation it is obvious that asthe toy is drawn forward or pushed backward by means of the handle 22 the rotary motion of the wheel having the pinion 1d attached will, through the medium of the gear-wheel 17,in1- part a similar movement to the block 16, whereby any ornament carried by the said block will be given a rotary motion.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the axle 10, hava central vertical opening and a socket 21 on the front Wall of said opening, the wheels on said axle, one of which has a pinion, and the handle secured at its inner end Within said socket, of the horizontal gear-wheel 17, meshing into said pinion and having a central post turning in said vertical opening, and the block 16 on the said wheel 17, substantially as set forth.

2. The herein-described toy, comprising the axle, the wheels thereon, the rotary block mounted on the axle and rotated from one of the Wheels, a horizontal pin-wheel on the upper faceof the block, and the disks 20 on the pin above the pin-wheel, substantially as set forth.
