UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL SIERSDORFER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
TOWE L-HOLD ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,252, dated January 28, 1890.
Application filed April 29, 1389: Serial No. 309,006, (No model.)
T0 (oZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, lVIICHAEL SIERSDORFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Towel- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a clip or holder for ,.so suspending towels, napkins, &c., as, while facilitating their use, to make impossible their clandestine removal or abstraction. With this object in view the nipping-jaws on being closed over the inserted towel or napkin become automatically locked to such condition, and so remain until released by a key in the hand of the proprietor or his representative.
The accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, are vertical sections of a towel-holder embodying my improvements. 1
Figure 1 shows the device in the open or inoperative condition, and Fig. 2 shows the device in the closed condition and grasping a towel or napkin.
1 is a bow of spring-steel, to whose extremities are soldered or otherwise permanently fastened at 2 2 two jaws 3 3', whose lower ends have two opposing studs or bosses 4t 4:,
which, when the jaws are pressed together, as in Fig. 2, nearly or quite meet within and loosely occupy a ring 5,whose eye or opening flares from the mid-thickness of the ring outward in both directions. The resilience of the bow 1 tends to bring and retain the unlocked clip to the open condition shown in Fig. 1.
The clip becomes automatically locked to the closed condition by the following means: Secured to one of the jaws is a latch 6, and to the other jaw a keeper 7, which has an orifice 8 for the entrance of the said latch, and a pivoted spring-dog 9, that automatically engages the hook of the latch. The forward or effective stress of said dog is due to a spring 10. A stop 11 properly limits its forward play, so as to present it in proper position to spring past and to engage Withthe latch, so as to imprison the same within the keeper and to thus-lock the parts to their closed or effective condition. The dog extends beyond its pivot in form of a heel 12, which being pressed by a key 13, inserted through the keyhole 14, operates to retract the dog and allow the resilient force of the bow 1 to open the clip and thus liberate the towel or other article.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a towel holder or clip, the combination, with the ring 5, of the jaws 3 3, connected by spring-bow 1, and having the opposed bosses 4 4', one jaw having a latch 6 and the other 'jaw having a lock 7, which contains a spring dog 9 for engagement and retention of said latch and said ring on closure of said jaws, as and for the purposes explained.
MICHAEL SIERSDORFER.
