Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo GEoRGE TURNER,v oE LANSING, MICHIGAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Paten-t No. 41,348, dated March 15, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TURNER, of Lansing, in the county of Ingham and Stafe of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Gate and Door Closing Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which- Figure l is aperspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing theapplication of the invention to either a right or left hand gate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The invention relates to an improvement in the old and well-known weight-and-pulley attachment for closing do0rs,and is also designed to supersede the ordinary weight-and-cha'n attachment for closing gates.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a xed and a self-adjusting pulley arranged in such a manner that the device may be applied to either a right or a left hand door or gate, and operate equally well vin either application without the liability of the cord slipping from the pulleys in any position of the door or gate, the weight at the same time being entirely'out of the way.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an arm, which may be of castiron, and having at one end two plates, a a, which are at right angles with each other, said plates having holes in them, thrpugh which screws pass to secure the arm Ato the angle ofthe door or gate-post B, as will be understood by referring to Fig. 3. v
At the outer or opposite end of the arm A there is a vertical fixed pulley, O, the axis b of which has its bearings in pendants c c, so that the upper surface of the pulley C will be below the top of the arm, as shown clearly in Fig. I.
To the outer end of the arm A there is attached bya pivot-bolt, d, a plate, D, which is allowed to work on the bolt d a certain distance, either to the right or left, as will be understood by referring to Fig. 2, in which the plate D is shown in one position in black and in the other in red. This movement of the plate D is limited. by means of shoulders e at the under side of the arm A, and similar shouli ders, f, at the under side of the plate D. (See Fig. 1 anud dotted lines in Fig. 2.)
At the under side of the front part of the plate D there is a horizontal pulley, E, which is fitted loosely on a vertical pendent axis, g, attached to plate D. The periphery of the pulleys E and C are of concave form, and the center of the periphery of the pulley E is in line, or nearlyso, with the center of the upper part of the periphery of the pulley C, so
that the rope or cord (shown in red) which l passes over the pulley C will pass in a horizontal line around the pulley E, as shown in red in Fig. 1.
The arm-is secured by screws or bolts to the post to which the door or gate is hung, said arm projecting angularly from the post at the door or gate side, in consequence of the plates a a abutting against two adjoining sides. of it, las shown in Fig. 3. The rope or cord is attached to the door or gate at about one-third the distance of its width from its free :or unhinged end.
v From the above description it will be seen that as the door or gate is opened and closed the weight will riseand fall by the side of the post to whichthe arm A is attached, and to which the door or gate is hung, the pulleyE serving as a guide to keep the cord or rope properly on C. rIhe pivoted plate Dadmits of the arm A being attached to the post of either a right l or left hand door or gate, as will be seen by referring to Fig. 3,'in which the arm A is shown in red attached to an opposite post. By this adjustment of the plate D the pulley E, which is attached to it, is allowed to adj ust itself in line with the xed pulley U when the arm A is attached to either post.
By this arrangement the weight is entirely out of the way, and is far preferable to the swinging chain and weight hitherto applied to gates, as the latter arrangement is frequently in the way, and the Weight has a very unequal action on the gate. My invention may also be advantageously applied to doors when a weight is preferred to a spring for closing them.
rIhe pulleys C E, in consequence of being below or unllerueatll the arm A and plate D, combination with an adjustable plate, D, pivare fully protected from snow and ice in Winoted to A and having a horizontal pulley, E, ter. 1 4fitted to it, all arranged to operate in the maul-Iaving thus described my invention, what 11er substantially as and for the purpose here- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters in set forth.
Pateut,isi GEORGE TURNER.
A pulley device for the weight, cord, or rope Vitnesses: l of doors and gates, composed of an arm, A, S. D. NEWBRO,
Vwith a fixedx-ertioal pulley, C, attached, in EPfNEWBRO.
