SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,233, dated January 14, 1890.

Be it known that I, CHESTER J. ADS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Throat-Dampers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in dampers for chimney-throats; and it consists in apeculiarly-constructed damper located in the throat of the chimney.

These improvements are constructed, com bined, and arranged to operate substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a fire-grate having my improvements embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front View of the chimney-damper. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same, both enlarged. Fig. 5 is a View of a portion of one of the wings of the damper, showing part of sliding bar and means of opening and closing the damper.

A represents an open-work grate-front for covering the jambs and lintel of a fire-place.

B is a fire-basket set in the usual manner in a chimney-place C. The lower front of the grate is closed by doors D, having suitable draft-dampers d.

In the throat of the chimney I place a damper of peculiar construct-ion, as follows: I is a frame completely filling the throat leading from the fire-place into the chimney C.

This frame is partitioned off into a number of openings by bars 2' i. In the lower side of said frame I is fitted a sliding slotted bar J. K K are wings having journals or trunnions k 70 on two of their corners, by which they are attached to the top and lower sides of the frame I, said trunnions being set in holes made for that purpose, and upon which the wings are made to turn, the lower trunnions passing through the slots 3' j of the bar J. The lower side of each wing K is provided with an offset 712- next to the lower trunnions, and said offset stands between two pins p p, fixed in the upper side of the said bar J. The bar J is also provided with an arm J by which it may be pushed for sliding it for opening or closing the wings.

This damper is readily opened or closed by means of a poker pushing upon J I claim The combination, in a fire-place, of a throatdamper consisting of a frame I, divided by bars 2' i, the wings K K, coveringthe openings between said bars and provided with trunnions k 70, fitted to turn in said frame I, and the slotted sliding bar J, having pins p 2) cmbracing the offsets m on said wings, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
