S. W. ALEXANDER.
BARREL HEAD FASTENER. No. 419,097. 1 Patented Jan. 7.1890..
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SILAS I/VRIGHT ALEXANDER, OF LETART FALLS, OHIO.
BARREL-HEAD FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part o1" Letters Patent No. 419,097, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed July 6, 1889. Serial No. 316,662. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs WRIGHT ALEX- ANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Letart Falls, in the 'county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-IIead Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full7 clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to abarrel-head fastener.
The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the end of a barrel, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the barrel on the line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the fastener and an elevation of the blank from which the fastener is formed.
The object of the invention is to provide a metal fastener for barI'el-heads which approximates the bevel of the chine and is wedged in the angle between the head and chine and secured therein by having a portion extended into the said barrel.
The fastener is in the shape of a staple and comprises the inclined end A and the side prongs a, the latter being parallel and approximately triangular in shape, the point being opposite the inclined endA.
The barrel, comprising the staves B, the head C, and the hoops D, is of usual construction. The fastener is placed on the head and driven through the chine and hoop opposite the head. The inclined end of the fastener approximates the bevel of the chine.
Having thus described lny invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The combination, with the barrel, of the head-fastener composed of an end portion A,
which approximates the bevel of the chine and is wedged in the angle between the head and the chine, and having a portion projected into the barrel, whereby the fastener is held in place, substantially as described;
2. The hereinbeforespecied barrel-head fastener, composed of an inclined portion A, which is designed to be wedged in the angle between the chine and head of the barrel, and having fastening-prongs at each end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SILAS WRIGHT ALEXANDER. \Vitnesses:
JOHN O. PRICE, A. B. ALEXANDER.
