Patented Jam '7, 1890.
.(IIIIIIIIIIIIILIIII WIZ/VZU'SES rapher. Washl'l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORPHEUS C. GILMORE, OF CLINTON, \VISCONSIN.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,011, dated January '7, 1890.
Application filed September 7, 1889- Serial No. 323,233- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORPHEUS C. GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel features in the construction of snaps or snaphooks, the object of which is to make it possible to use such snap with great convenience and absolute safety. This result is secured by means of the device described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa perspectiveviewof myimproved snap complete. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the various parts forming my snap separated from each other. Fig. 4 is a top view, while Fig. 5 is a bottom view. Fig. 6 is a side view of the tongue.
In the following description, when reference is made to the top and bottom of my snap, in order to show the meaning of such designation, attention is called to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.
Referring to the several parts of my invention by letter, A is the body proper, which is made somewhat in the usual manner of forming snaps by bending the thinned end thereof back upon itself to form the hookby means of the overreaching lip a. The body and thelip may be made the same width throughout, though such form may be varied, if preferred. The upper part of the body is to be hollowed out to form the longitudinal slot or groove B nearly the entire width of the body proper, while immediately under the overreaching lip a a rectangular mortise O is cut through the bottom of such groove and of the full width thereof. This groove B and mortise O are for the purpose of receiving the tongue D, a side view of which is shown in Fig. 6. This tongue is to consist of a piece of metal of a proper width and length to fill said groove and reach from the rear end of the body to and slightly under the lip a, the lip end of the tongue being properly cut away to receive such lip, so that the outer surface thereof and tongue will be flush with each other. Projecting from the snap end of the tongue D is arranged the downward-reaching tooth d, which is of a proper size to snugly fill the rectangular mortise 0, provided in the bottom of the groove B immediately under the lip a, as stated.
The rear end of tongue D is to be pivotally secured to the sides of the body by rivet a, as shown, and it will be seen that a space is left between the tongue and the bottom of the groove, and occupying this space is the longitudinal spring F, the rear end of which is secured to the bottom of the groove, while the other end reaches forwardly and upwardly and bears against the lower side of the tongue, thereby holding such tongue firmly against the under side of the lip a, and it will be understood that a downward pressure upon the free end of the tongue D will open the hook for receiving the ring or other object to be engaged by the snap, and that when such pressure upon the tongue is removed the spring F will force the same 11pward in position against the under side of the lip, and thereby secure the ring or other object engaged by the snap. To the rear endof the snap may be provided in the usual manner a loop or ring for engaging with the strap, chain, or other object to which the snap is to be secured.
In the above description, when reference is made to the rear end of the snap, it is meant to be understood that such designanation means that end of the snap usually attached firmly to a strap or chain, as in contradistinction to the lip end thereof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- I A snap-hook consisting of a body having an overhanging lip a at one end and having longitudinal side flanges at its other end and provided with a mortise O in its bottom, a tongue pivoted at its rear end between the side flanges of the body and having its free In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in end adapted to engage under the edge of the presence of two Witnesses.
lip a and rovided with a de endin tooth 1 adapted to fill the mortise (If and it leaf- ORPHEUD GILMORE 5 spring secured at its rear end to the body and Witnesses:
.having its front end bearing against the un- WM. JONES,
der side of the tongue, as specified. O. L. VVOODWARD.
