Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. VAN DEVENTER, OF DUNDEE, MICHIGAN.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,797, dated March 1, 1864.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. VAN DE- VENTER, of Dundee, in the county of Monroe and State Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Slitting-Gage; and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line x Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section ot' the same, taken in the line gl y, Figfl.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a slitting-gage of simple construction, which will admit of its knife being adjusted with the greatest facility, in order to cut at a greater or less depth, as desired, and lalso admit of havingits parts detached, so as to render the device portable when not required for use, or when stowed away, or packed for transportation. Y
To enable those skilled inthe ait to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the bar or beam ofthe device, which may be of wood, and B is a slide fitted in the beam A, and secured to it at any desired point by a set-screw, C. This slide may also be of wood.
I) ri presents the handle or head of the device, the form of which is shown clearly in Fig. 2. This handle or head may be of cast. iron, and it is provided with a socket, a, at one side of its lower end, said socket receiving one end of the beam A, the latter being secured in the former by a screw, b, as shown clearly in Fig. l.
In the handle or head D there is made a vertical hole or opening, c, in which the cutter E is tted, said cutter extending through an orifice in the bottom of the head. This cutter has its cutting-edge of the usual form, and its shank is provided with a nut, d, through which a set-screw, e, passes, said set-screw passing through a screw or plug, f, which is tted in the upper orice of the hole or opening c. By turning the screw e the cutter E may be raised or lowered so that its cutting-edge may operate at a greater or less depth, as may be required.
In the lower part of the head D there is made a horizontal hole or opening, f, in which a key or wedge,I `,istitted. This key or wedge passes the cutter E, and binds against it so as to hold it firmly in position, as will be understood by referring to Fig. 1.
In adjusting the cutter higher or lower, the key or wedge F is removed, and inserted in its place when the cutter is brought to the desired point. In the face or lower part of the head D there is fitted a friction-roller, G, which is at the inner side of the cutter E, and is designed to obviate friction as the head D is shoved over the face of the board.
By adjusting the slideBon the beam A the boa-rd or stuit' may be sltted of any required width, and as near to the right-hand edge of the board as may be required.
When the device is not required for use,
lthe handle or head may be removed, as well as the slide, and the parts packed or stowed of the handle, a beam socket, a, at its side, a
screw, e, for adjusting the knife, and a tapering key, E, passing from the front into the lower part of the handle, and otherwise constructed and operating in the manner herein shown and explained.
JOHN W. VAN DEVENTER. Witnesses:
HENRY WA'rLING, JOSEPH PARKER.
