Description

UNITED STATES A IATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. DREW, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BLACKING MIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,910, dated December 24, 1889.
Application filed August 29, 1888- Serial No. 284,066. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. DREW, of Lynn, county of Essex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain Improved Blacking Mixture, for use on shanks and heels and bottoms of boots and shoes; and I have fully and accurately described the same'in the following specification. y
This mixture is designed for use on the surface of shoe shanks, heels, and bottoms as a substitute for the burnished finish now commonly imparted to said surfaces. To this endI take of water one gallon and dissolve therein six ounces of borax andtwo and one-half pounds of gum-shellac. To this I add a proper and elfective quantity-gene1ally about one tea-spoonf ulof oil of sassafras, which removes the bubble left by the union of the shellac and borax with the Water and givesa bright finish to the mixture as applied. I blacken this mixture by adding thereto two ounces of arefined quality of aniline-black, known to the trade as Nigrosine. It may be reddened by adding a solution of logwood, and it is better to add a little aqua-ammonia of the usual strength to set the color.
The mixture is applied, by means of a brush or other suitable spreading device, to the surface of the leather composing the boot or shoe shank, heel, and bottom. It is allowed to dry thereon and presents afinish very much like the usual burnished surface.
The above-stated quantities of materials "employed are substantially what give the best JOHN G. DREW.
