Description

(No Model.)
A; H.- MUNSBLL.
ARTISTS EASEL.
No. 417,831. Patented Dec. 24, 1889.
a [ml ME?" afbarnq UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT I-I. MUNSELL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ARTISTS EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,831, dated December 24, 1889.
Application filed January 12, 1889. Serial No. 296,212. (No model.)
To coZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. MUNsELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bos ton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artists Easels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of easels used for sketching purposes,'and has for its objects, first, simplicity of construction and economy of space; secondly, it provides for the holding of any portfolio or drawing-board at any desired angle or height, the lower edge of said portfolio or drawing board being supported upon the knees, ground, or other surface; and, thirdly,
it provides for the retention of any paper or canvas upon said portfolio or drawing-board.
. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the invention in use.
Similar letters refer to similar parts througout the several views.
The leg, of adjustable length, consists of two parts A A, held together by suitable metal straps B B and retained in any position by the thumb-screw 0, bearing upon a metal gib or directly on the part A. The foot is tipped with rubber J to prevent slipping. The
head or clamp, secured upon the aforesaid adjustable leg by the hinge I, consists of two pieces D D, properly hinged at either extremity, opening downward for the reception of any portfolio, drawing-board, or other surface for drawing or painting and set together by the thumb-screw E. The thrust of the thumb-screw is received upon a metal washer F and the adhesion of the clamp increased by strips of rubber G, applied upon the pieces D D. The lower edge of any portfolio or similar object resting upon the knees or other support may have its upper edge securely clamped between the parts D D by means of the thumb-screw E, and any desirable inclination and height obtained by means of the adjustable legs A A, thus serving the purposes of an ordinaryeasel, but occupying less space and being simpler in construction. It also holds in place any paper or canvas upon said portfolio or drawing-board. Itmay also be constructed, for greater stability, with a cross-piece at the bottom of the part A, or with two legs braced together below and at tached to the extremities of the head, or without the hinge I, as in Fig. 2.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be employed, I declare that what I claim is In an easel, a leg composed of the parts A A, adjustable by means of the bands B and screw 0 and hinged at the end of A, and a head consisting of the parts D D, hinged together and adapted by means of the screw E to be clamped upon the upper edge of a drawingboard, all constructed and operating substantially as specified.
ALBERT II. MUNSELL.
