My invention relates to an-improved device for holding and packing hats, especially ap-- plicable to soft hats, and has for its object to enable a convenient number of hats to be packed together in as small-a compass as possiblefor convenience of stowage and carriage without injury.

It consists in two shields or flanged coverpieces, between which when constrained toward each other a series of hats (one hat entering the other) are packed and pressed together, combined with features of novelty= hereinafter claimed.

a to represent two end flanged shields or cover-pieces, made of wood or other suitable material, and, preferably, of a flat oval disk shape, corresponding with and extending circumferentially somewhat beyond the rim of a hat. Projecting from the flange of the up per cover-piece a is a central recess or box I), which opens from the under side of the coverpiece a, for receiving the crown of a hat, as seen more particularly in Fig. 3. On the upper side of the flanged lower cover-piece a is an oval-shaped central projection c, which is adapted to enter the opening of a hat. To

through which is a central hole g, for the passage of the crown of a hat, the disk f being located 'between and parallel to the end coverpieces a a, as hereinafter more particularly referred to. Through the disk f, nearits circumference, are formed holes h, through which are passed the straps d.

In operation, a hat ibein'g placed with the lower side of its rim downward onto the upper side of the cover-piece a, so that the projection c 011 the latter enters the opening of the hat o, a series of hats t" i are placed on the hat 2', so that the crown of the latter enters the crown of hat t", crown of hat 1" that of hat i and so on for any desired pile of hats. A disk f is then slipped by its central hole 9 around the crown of, say, hat 1' and on the upper side of the disk f and crown of hat 1' is piled another-series of hats 2' 1', in a similar manner to the first series, until the requisite number of hats are arranged, when the cover-piece a is placed over the upper most hat, say 2' so that the crown of the latter occupies the recess of box 17 of the coverpiece a. The free ends of the straps d are then passed through the holes 77. of the intermediate disk (or disks) f, and through the buckles e of the straps cl, so that on forcing the cover-pieces a a toward each other the hats '1) to e with the intermediate disk f, will be thereby pressed together into the desired compass for stowage within atraveling-trunk, or otherwise, for carriage, when by tightening the straps d d accordingly the cover-pieces a a will be secured in this position by the action of the buckles 6. Owing to the passage of the straps d through the holes 7?. of the disk f, the latter forms an intermediate support to the entire series of hats, whereby a greater number of hats can be packed between the cover-pieces a 0. than could otherwise be safely carried.

By my invention the hats are screened from dirt and the shape of their rims preserved from injury.

I claim 1. In a device for baling hats, the combination of two flanged covers, one of which is provided with a recess or box adapted to receive the crown of the hat and the other with a central projection adapted to enter the crown of the hat, said flanges extending be yond the brim of the hats, and means for securing said flanged covers at suitable distanccs apart, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In a device for baling hats, the combination, with two flanged covers, one of which is provided with a recess or box adapted to receive the crown of a hat and the other with a central projection adapted to enter the crown of a hat, of one or more flat disks having a central opening through which the crown of ahat passes, said disks and flanges extending beyond the brim of the hats, and means for connecting or securin g said flanged covers and disks at suitable distances apart, substantially as and for the purposes de scribed.

3. In a hat holder and packing device, the combination of a shield or cover having a recess or box for the reception of the crown of the hat, and a shield or cover having a central projection, with straps secured to the cover-pieces, and having buckles whereby the cover-pieces can be secured together at different distances apart, substantially as and for the purposes described.

4. In a hat holder or packing device, the combination, with the cover-pieces, of one or more intermediate disks having central openings through which the crown of a hat can pass, and slots near their peripher and straps secured to said cover-pieces and adapted to pass through the slots in the intermediate disks to connectsaid covers at fixed distances apart, substantially as and for the purposes described.
