CORNELIUS OIfIIPPENDALE, OF AUBURN, MAINE.
Loom-PICKER.
SIPEt'HFICA'lIONl forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,665, dated December 17, 1889.
V Application filed August 21, 1889. Serial No. 321,466. (No model.)
To all whom, it 11mg concern:
Be it known that l, CORNELIUS CHIPPEN- DALE, of Auburn, in the county of Andros- I coggin and State of Maine, have invented a newand Improved Loom-Picker, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This'invention relates to loom-pickers, the
. drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar igures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional view of myimproved picker as attached to the picker-staff. Fig. 2 is a face view thereof. Fig. Sis a rear view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the picker and staii, and Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the picker-housing is formed.
In constructing the picker forming -the subject-matter of this application, I provide a blank 10, of metal, preferably of steel, formed with an aperture a, with main wings b b,.
adapted to fit against the sides` of the pickerstaff, and with auxiliary wings or leaves c c and d d d d', the leaves and wings being so `proportioned that they may be bent and riveted to place, as represented in the drawings, the'wings b b and the leaves c c being bent at right angles .to the body, and the leaves d d being bent at right angles to the wings b b over the leaves c c', the arrangement being such that a housing is formed, and within this housing I arrange a number of layers of scrap-leather, such layers being shown at 11 in Fig. 1. The wings b b', having been bent, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to iitA closely against the picker-staff 20, a heavy rivet 12 is secured in the ends of the said wings. Between the wings when I apply the picker to the staff I place a heavy spring 14, which passes beneath the rivet or bolt 12 in a position to be borne upon by a locking-lever 15, which is formed with an eccentrically-recessed head 16, the head being arranged for engagement with the rivet or bolt 12, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, the arrangement being such that by bringing the head 16 into engagement with the rivet or bolt 12 and then turning the lever 15 to the posit-ion in which it is shown in Fig. 1 the picker will be firmly locked to the staif.
By means of the picker and securing devices above described I dispense with the ordinary picker-loop, and also with the screw, by means of which pickers have heretofore been fastened to their staffs, and at the same time I am enabled to utilize scrap-leather which would otherwise go to waste.
The picker may be readily applied to the stai and adjusted to the required position, and as the leather layers 11 wear out they may be easily renewed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a picker-staff, of a housing provided with wings connected by a rivet, a lever having an eccentric-head engaging the rivet of lthe housing, and aspring arranged between the eccentric -head and picker-staff, substantially as described.
2. In a picker, the combination, with ablank bent to form a housing, and having an aperture c., of a rivet or bolt 12, which passes through win gs forming a portion of the blank, a spring 14, and an eccentric-headed lockinglever, substantially as described.
