JOE T. SCARBROUGH, OF LAFAYETTE, ALABAMA.
HARROW AN 0 cu LTIVAIT'OIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,651, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed $eptemher 6, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OE T. SCARBROUGH, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows and Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of harrows and cultivators in which a skeleton frame carrying teeth, blades, or other culti- Vators is removably secured to an ordinary plow stock or standard.
My invention consists in improved devices for securing the harrow-frame to the plowstandard, and in improved means for adj usting the frame andattaching it adj ustably to the plow-beam.
The details of construction and the subjectmatter claimed are hereinafter designated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved harrow applied to an ordinary plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, someof the parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in section, of the lower end of the plow-standard, showing my improved devices for attaching the harrow-frame to the standard. Fig. 4cis a detail view, in perspective, of the locking device used in securing the barrow-frame to the standard; and Fig. ois a detail view of the front plate, which is secured to the plow-standard, and to which the arms of the harrow-frame are hinged.
The plow-beamA is provided with handles B, which are secured to its rear end by bolts 12, in the usual way. The plow-standard O is of a well-known form, and is secured to the plow-beam by bolts 0. The standard or stock 0 is bifurcated and curved at its lower end 0, the extreme lower end being made solid at C As shownin Fig. 3, the inner face of the solid portion 0 is inclined rearwardly in order to facilitate the attachment of the harrow-frame, as hereinafter described.
The standard, or stock 0 is braced by a rearwardly-extending bar D, secured at its lower end by a bolt d to the standard and at its upper end by a bolt d to the plow-beam at its rear end. The harrow-frame consists of two metallic arms E, carrying teeth, blades, or
Serial No. 323,127. (No model.)
cutters F, the upper ends of which extend through the arms E and are provided with adjusting-nuts f. The teeth maybe adjusted to any desired angle to regulate the cut.
At their front ends the arms E are hinged by bolts 9 to the front or coupling plate G. This plate is formed with a central depression or recess G, having its inner front face inclined, as shown, to fit the inclined or curved front face of the plow-standard O. The front plate is also provided with laterallyprojecting wings G the upper faces of which are fiat and horizontal, and to these wings are hinged by means of the bolts g the front ends of the arms E. The front middle portion of the coupling-piece G is perforated at g, and a bolt H extends through this perforation and through the bifurcated standard O. The inner screw-threaded end of the bolt projects beyond the inner side of the standard and carries an adj listing-nut J, which is provided with a handle J to permit of its being readily adjusted. To more securely lock the coupling-piece G to the bolt H and to the plow-standard, I provide a locking-piece K, (shown in perspective in Fig. 4,)
which is formed with an annular end It, an inclined shank k, and a top cross-piece 10 The annular end is fits over the inner end of the bolt H. The shank extends through the bifurcated plow-standard and rests on the top of the front coupling-plate G. By this means theharrow-frame is securely fastened to the plow-standard. hen once fixed, the plate cannot slide relatively to the standard, because, the lower end of the locking-piece being secured to the bolt and the upper crosspiece resting on the coupling-plate, a practically-rigid connection is formed between the bolt H, the harrow-fram e, and the plow-s tan d ard.
About midway between their ends the arms of the harrow-frame are provided with adj ustable cross-pieces L L. The cross-pieces L L are secured by bolts Z to the arms E. The cross-piece L is provided with a series of perforations, as shown, and the cross-piece L is provided with a perforation Z, through which extends a bolt l through a perforation in the cross-piece L. A second bolt Z also extends through corrc- This bolt also extends IOO sponding perforations in the cross-pieces. By withdrawing the bolts the arms of the harrowframe may be moved inwardly or outwardly and then replaced in the proper perforations to hold the arms of the barrow-frame at the desired angle.
Inclined braces M connect the arms E to the rear end of the plow-beam. These braces are shown as consisting of bars of iron perfoated at their upper ends at and bent laterally at their lower ends m. The arms M are secured to the plow-beam by the bolts 1), which secure the plow-handles to the beam at their lower ends. The braces are secured to the arms E of the harrow-frame by the same bolts Z which secure the cross-pieces to the frame. The braces being formed with series of perforations, as shown, the proper adjustment may be made to correspond to the adjustment of the arms of the harrow-frame.
All the parts of my improved harrow are preferably made of metal, as is also the plowstandard, its brace, and the braces M.
I thus provide a simple and eificient implement which is both strong and durable, and the harrow attachment may be readily removed from the plow to which it is attached and as readily replaced.
By giving the arms of the frame the proper adjustment the harrow may be adapted to do all classes of work.
I claim'as of my own invention 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the plow-standard, the arms of the harrow-frame, the front couplingpiece to which they are hinged and which 'is secured to the plow-standard, the laterallyadjustable cross-pieces connecting the arms of the harrow-frame, and the adjustable inclined braces connected to the rear end of the plow-beam.
2. The combination, substantially as hereiubefore set forth, of the plow-beam, the plowstandard, the coupling-piece of the harrowf rame secured to the plow-standard at its lower end, the rearwardly-extending arms hinged to the coupling-piece, the perforated cross-pieces connecting the arms and provided with securing-bolts, the forwardly-inclined braces provided with series of perforations at their upper and their lower ends, secured at their lower ends to the arms of theharrowframe by the same bolts that connect the cross-pieces to the arms, and at their upper ends to the plow-beam by the same bolts or the same bolt that connects the handles to the plow-beam.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the plow-beam, the bifurcated standard, the frontplate or coupling provided with a central recess in which the lower end of the standard is seated and with laterally-projecting wings to which the rearwardly-extending arms of the harrowframe are hinged, and a securing-bolt extending through the coupling-piece and through the bifurcated standard.
4. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the plow-beam, the bifurcated standard, the front plate or coupling provided with a central recess in which the lower end of the standard is seated and with laterally-projecting wings to which. the rearwardlyextending arms of the harrowframe are hinged, a securing-bolt extending through the coupling-piece and through the bifurcated standard, the locking-piece consisting of the annular bottom piece 7e, shank 7t, and the top cross-piece said lockingpiece being connected at its lower end to the securing-bolt, the shank extending through the bifurcated standard, and the cross-piece resting on the upper edge of the couplingpiece.
5. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the plow-standard, the front plate or coupling provided with a central recess in which the lower end of the standard is seated and having laterally-projecting wings the upper faces of which are fiat and horizontal, the rearwardly-extending arms of the harrow-frame hinged to the wings of the coupling by vertical bolts, and laterallyadjustable cross-pieces connecting the rear ends of the arms.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOE T. SCARBROUGIT.
