` Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. VOOD` WARD, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have-invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps,of which the following is a specification.
I will describe a lamp embodying` my ixnprovement in detail, and then point out the novel features in claims. n
1o In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a partly-sectional side view of the lower part of a lamp embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the lower part of a lamp on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a view i5 similar to Fig. 2, except that it showscertain parts in a different position and omits the reservoir.4 Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line x Fig. 2. i

A designates a` support for a lamp-reservoir. As here shown, it forms a portion of a hanger or harp, and consists, essentially, of a i bow-shaped lower portion a and two arms a', 2 5 ,extending upwardly therefrom.' It is provided with shoulders a?.
B designates the lamp-reservoir. It may be made of any suitable material. In the present instance it is represented as made of sheet metal.
The support A and the reservoir B are provided with pins or projections and sockets which interlock to Vengage the reservoir with its support. In the present instance the pins or projections a3 are attached to or formed with the support A, and sockets b are attached to the reservoir. These sockets may be made of metal and secured'by solder or other means to the reservoir when the latter is made of metal. If the reservoir were made of other material-as, for 1 instance, glass-the lugs might be formed integral with a ring receiving the reservoir. Th'e sockets and pins or projections may be disengaged, and the reservoir then moved out of its support by a horizontal movement.

A spring c coils around the pin or bolt C, and, bearing against a head at the lower end of the latter and the lower end of the socket, moves the pin or bolt downwardly and holds it normally in its lowest position. Above the socket b is a bifurcate portion b2 of the part a, of the support. Within this 6o bifurcate port-ion are arranged tumblers or hooked plates c. These are hung at the up per end on a pin c2, which passes through the bifurcate portion b2. The tumblers or hooked plates are adapted to swing in reverse directions. rlheir hooked portions are on their outer edges. Near their lower ends there are oblique slots c3. The oblique slot of one tumbler or hooked plate extends in a reverse direction to thatof the other. Apin 7o c4 extends through the oblique slots c3, and is secured to the pin or bolt C. The upper end of the pin or bolt C is longitudinally slotted to fit the pin c2. By pressing the pin or bolt upwardly against the resistance of the spring c, the pin c4, acting within the oblique slots c, swings the tumblers or hooked plates inwardly, as may be understood by reference to Fig. 3. Vhen the pin or bolt C moves downwardly, the pin c4, acting within the oblique 8o slots c3, swings the tumblers or hooked plates outwardly, as may be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.
The reservoir B is provided on the under side with an extension B', having in it a cen- 85 tral socket bs. This socket slips over the bifurcate portion b2 ot' the support A and over the tumblers or hooked plates c. When the reservoir is in place in the support A, the socket b3 willbe below the hooked portions of 9o the tumblers or plates c and will be engaged thereby. 4
It will be seen that I prevent a lateral or horizontal displacement of the reservoir by means of the pins or projections and sockets ai I), and that I secure the reservoir against upward movement relatively to the support A by means of the catch or lock. To disengage lthe reservoir it is only necessary to press the pin or bolt C upwardly, and .then lift the Ico reservoir slightly and subsequently to move it laterally or horizontally.
It is very desirable to be able to remove the reservoir without much upward movement, because when the upward movement is reduced the burner and chimney may the more readily be moved beyond the shade of the lal'np and the support-for the shade.
`Nhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
1. In a lamp, the combination, with a reservoir and a support therefor, of pins or pro'- jeetions and sockets whereby the reservoir and support may be engaged topreventthe horizontal movement of the one relatively to the other, and a catch or lock arranged beneath the reservoir for securing the reservoir and support against independent vertical movement, substantially as specified.
2. In a lamp, the combination, with a res.- ervoir and a support therefor, of pins or projeetions and sockets whereby the reservoir and support may be engaged to prevent the horizontal movement of the one relatively to the other, a catch or lock consisting of a bolt, and tumblers engaging with a socket, substantially as specified 3. In a lamp, the combination, with a reservoir and a support therefor, of pins or projections and sockets whereby the reservoir and support 1na7 be engaged to prevent the horizontal movement of the one relatively to the other, and a catch or lock consisting of a vert-ical bolt and horizontally-moving tumblers, substantially as specified.
