IMPROVED WRINGING-MACHINE.

Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 41,759, dated March 1, 1864.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, MATTHEW JOHN OLUFF, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVringing-Machines 5 and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represen-ts a perspective view of a wringing-machine to which my improvements are applied.

It is a great desideratum in clothes-wringing machines that they should be constructed with a view of adaptability to tubs of varying sizes and shapes. This, as well as the simplifying of the construction of the whole machine, particularly in the mode of securing the adjustin g-sprin gs of therollers to the main frame, are the principal objects of my present invention, which consists in the combination, with the fixed legs of the frame, of swivelbrackets, which are provided with horizontal clamp-screws to act upon the sides of the tub.

It further consists in securing the adjustingsprings, to which the rollers of the machine are attaehed,within slots of the frame, whereby simplicity of construction and compactness of the machine are attained.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I shall now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the framek of the machine, whose uprights or vertical sides terminate in cylindrical pins or legs B, to which the swivelbrackets C are secured and held in place by means of small pins a. The brackets O are made to freely turn or rotate on the legs B, the pins a simply preventing their moving` longitudinally upon the legs B. The clampscrews D pass through the ends of the brackets C, and the washers E, at their ends, bear against the inner side of the tub. It will be readily seen that the legs ,B, being set on the outer side of the tub G, (represented in red line,) the position, of the bracket C, when the screw D is forced against the inner side of the tub, will readily adjust itself in a radial position to the tub, thereby causing the clamp-screw E to act properly against the side of the tub, irrespective of its size and shape, thus constituting a very simple and highlyefficient device for securin g the clothes-wrin ger to tubs, not only of different sizes, but also of different forms, as the clamp screws will l operate equally' well against a straight or curved side.

H represents the springs to which the journal-'boxes I of the rollers K are secured. They are intended to press the rollers K together with sufficient force to squeeze out of the clothes, when forced through between the rollers, the greater part of the water retained. This spring is secured to the frame by providing the latter with a slot at b, through which one end ot' the spring H is passed before attachin g there to the rollers K and journ al-boxes I, and thus the spring H is eectually secured to the frame without the application of screws or any other fasteningdevices, thereby producing a light yet strong and compact frame, the cost of manufacturing of which is greatly reduced.

L represents the guide-plates, at the ends of the rollers K, through Which the journals of the latter pass. They serve the purpose of preventing any side motions of the rollers, and they are provided with flanges d, which prevent the clothes from working in at the ends of the rollers when they lare operated upon.

Having thus fully described my invention, and the manner in Which the same is or may be carried into effect, I claiml. The method of securing a clothes-wringing machine to tubs of varying sizes and shapes, by the use, in combination with two stationary legs, of swivel-brackets swinging on said legs, and provided with set-screws or other adjusting devices, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.

2. Constructing the frame of a clotheswringing machine with slots to hold the adj listing-springs of the rollers of the machine, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.

3. Constructing the frame of a wringingmachine with slots to hold the adjusting springs of the rollers, in combination with the extension of the vertical sides thereof, forming pins or legs for. the swivel-brackets, as shown and described, the Whole being arranged to operate in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
