Description

(ModeL) W. BARNETT.-
STEAM INJEGTOR,
No. 417,463. Patented Dec. 17, 1889,,

UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
IVILLIAM BARNETT, OF MANSFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO THE GARFIELD INJECTOR COMPANY, OF IVADSIVORTH, OHIO.v
STEAM-INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,463, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed July 15, 1889. $e'rial No.31 7,617. (ModeL) i To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM BARNETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Injectors, of which the following 'is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.-
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in steam-injectors, having for its object the provision of an injector capable of being used as a combined lifting and forcing injector, or as a forcing-injector alone, or as an ejector without the forcing features; and the invention embraces an overflow-valve having its seat against an opening in the lower portion of the casing and an auxiliary overflow-valve located over the opening between the water and overflow chambers, the stems of said valves being extended above and beyond the injector-casing.
The invention also comprises the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully setforth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved injector. Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the tubular casting or casing, having the steam-' inlet arm a, the overflow-arm a, and the delivery-arm a B is the lower water-inlet arm or extension opening at one end into the water-chamberb of easing A.
B, overjet G, is screwed a plug D, as shown in Fig. 1, or in lieu thereof a second valve D the latter being employed when the device is to be used as an ejector.
In using my invention as a combined lifting valve D'can be interchanged when an ejector is the form of device desired.
E is the lifting-tube, screwed into a flanged wall 6 of the water-inlet arm B, the forward end thereof being near the lower steam-jet- C.
F is the combining-tube, made or formed integral with the delivery-tube f. These tubes are screwed into the flanged end f of an in nentubular extension) of the overflow-chamber G, and the forward end of said combiningtube is adjacent the upper steam-jet C. A primary or secondary overflow-valve II, having its stem h engaging and projecting through a plug h, is seated over an opening h in the tubular extension f I is the main overflow-valve, seated over an opening in the lower portion of easing A. Its stem?) is projected vertically through the cas ing and an upper plug 2", whereby it, as well as the stem of the secondary valve, can be readily manipulated.
In practice, in using my device as a combined lifting and forcing injector, steam is admitted, and, the valve D being opened, the
lifting of water is effected into the water-inlet arm, from which it will pass to the main water-chamber b, and at the mouth of the combining-tube the water is taken up by the steam passing through jet C and forced through the tubes to the boiler or receptacle.
In the starting of the injector prior to the establishment of the jet or column it is necessary to first open the overflow-valves H I, the
former permitting the passage of the overflow from the water-chamber to the main over-flowchamber, from which it, passes to the outer atmosphere. After the column is established these valves are closed.
To use this device as a forcing-injector alone, the lower valve D is closed, or plug D and washer D are inserted in .place, and the water, being fed under pressure, will pass into the water-chamber and from there be carried IOO to the boiler by the forcing-jet of steam, as before described. Again, when the device is to be used solely as an ejector, the upper valve 1) is closed, or it may be replaced by a plug and washer, and the steam permitted to pass through the lower series of tubes, forcing the water to the boiler or other receptacle.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. By means thereof I ani enabled to lift hotter water than has heretofore been possible with this class of inventions, and the same can also be used as a combined lifting and forcing injector, a forcing-injector alone, or as an ejector. There is also decided advantage in having the oyerflow-valve seated against the bottom of the casing and in proj ecting the valve-stems above said casing.
\Vhen the invention is to be used only as a forcing-injector and as an ejector, one steamvalve is sufiicient, because the valve D and plug 1) and its washer can be interchanged when the ejector is the machine desired.
I claim as my invention 1. A steam-injector having upperand lower series of tubes, an upper valve having a removable plug, and a lower removable plug interchangeable with said former plug and valve, substantially as set forth, whereby the injector may be used for lifting and forcing, for forcing alone, or as an ejector, as stated.
2. As an improvement in steam-injectors,
the casing having the lower water-inlet arm opening thereinto and provided with steam and water lifting tubes and the valve or plug fitted thereover, in combination with the upper series of tubes and the upper steam-valve, substantially as set forth.
A steam-injector having a lower waterinlet arm and a series of steam and water inlet tubes, and the lower plug and the washer secured thereby over said steam-tube, in combination with the upper series of steam and waterforcin g tubes and the upper steam-valve, substantially as set forth, whereby a forcinginjector is secured, as stated.
4. In a steam-in j ector, the combi nation, with the casin g having the lower overfiow-openin g and the inner tubular extension f provided with. an upper overflow-opening, of the overflow-valves seated over said openings and havingstems projecting therefrom up through said casing, substantially as set forth.
5. In an injector having interchangeable parts, the plug herein described and the washer designed to be secured thereby, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BARNE'N.
