CARRIAGE RUNNING GEAR.
No. 417,317. Patented Dec. 17, 18879.
N. PETERS, Fhulolilhoghpher. Wrlahillghl!v D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFREN M. FITCH, OF ROME, NElV-YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MOSES M. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
CARRIAGE RUNNING-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 417,317, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed October 2, 1889. Serial No. 325,794. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAUREN M. FITCH, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage Running- Gear; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in carriage or buggy springs and running-gears, and particular features of construction.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar letters and figures of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows a perspective top view of the springs and running gear. Fig. 2 shows an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a central section of the front axle-tree and cap and bolster-bar and a cross-section of the same and top view of a clip shown therein. Fig. 3 shows an edge view of what I term a modified form of construction of the Y-shaped head-piece of the spring-braces. Fig. 4: shows a top, edge, and bottom View of a supporterpiece. Fig. 5 shows a modiliedform of the de- "ice shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows atop view of the Y-shaped head-piece. Fig. 7 shows a top view of part shown in Fig. 3".
Referring more specifically to the referencenumerals of the drawings, 1 indicates the rear axle, 2 the forward axle, and S the front bolster-bar.
3 3 are the main supporting-springs, clipped or secured to the rear axle and to the front bolster-bar8. Pieces at are provided, secured to the under side of springs 3 by clips 5 or other suitable means. Pieces 4: are oonstructed as right-s and lefts and are provided with a projection 6, which extends inside of the springs 23, upon which the body (not shown) rests, and to which it is secured. Pieces 4 are also provided on their under sides with a projecting lug 7. Pieces 4. are secured to the springs substantially in the middle. Rear spring brace and draw bars 9 are provided, clipped or otherwise suitably secured to the rear axle near the wheel-bearing, and pass to the lugs 7, secured on the under side of the spring, and preferably to the outside of the lug, where they terminate in an eye. Front spring brace and draw bars 10 extend from the lug 7, and preferably the inside thereof, to the Y-sha-ped head'piece 1], and are secured thereto by bolts passing through the overlapping ends of each, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or by an eye upon the bar and ears upon each branch of the Y-shaped head-piece, and a bolt passing through both, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7. The lug 7 upon the piece 4 is preferably at an angle to the line of the spring, so that the bars 9 and 10 will fit nicely thereto without binding. Bars 9 and 10 are secured to the lug 7 by a bolt 12, passing through the eye on the end of each, and a hole in the lug.
A bar 13 is provided, passing from spring to spring and secured to each spring 3 by a clip or other suitable contrivance. The bar 13, in connection with projections 6, supports the body; or I dispense with the bar 13 and use the supporter-piece shown in Fig t, in which case the body rests upon projections 6 and 14 and is bolted thereto.
The axle-cap is indicated by 16 and moves with axle 2.
15 is a clip which secures the bolster-bar 8 to the front axle, the two arms of which pass through openings-ct and Z; of the Y-shaped head-piece, and are provided with screwthreads and a nut above and one below the Y- shaped head-piece. Clip 15 may also be provided with a central prong, which passes through the bolster-bar, the friction-plates between the bo1ster-bar and axle-cap, the axle, and the opening a through the Y-shaped headpiece, and furnishes a pivot for the turning of axle and axle-cap between the bolster-bar and Y-shaped headpiece.
It is evident that other changes and modifications from those mentioned may be made in the construction without departing from principles or equivalents of my invention.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a running-gear, the combination of the rear and front axles, the pivoted bolster-bar, the pair of supporting-springs secured at one end to the rear axle and at each other to the bolster-bar, the supporting-piece secured to the under side of the central portion of each of the springs, and having a downwardly projecting perforated ear directly underthe spring, and the inwardly-extending projection adapted to support the body, and the draw or brace bars secured to the rear axle adjacent to the wheel-bearing and extending to and pivoted to the ear, and the forward draw or brace bars pivoted to the ear and extending to and pivoted centrally to the front axle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a running-gear, the combination of the rear and front axles, the bolster-bar pivoted to the front axle, the supporting-springs secured at one end to the rear axle and at the other to the bolster-bar, the body supp0rter-piece secured to the middle portion of each spring on the under side and having a projecting portion extending inwardly and adapted to support the vehicle-body, and having a downwardly-projecting perforated lug directly under the springs and at an angle to the spring and substantially in line with aline drawn from the rear axle adjacent to the wheel-bearing to the central portion of the front axle, the brace-bars secured to the rear axle adjacent to the whee1-bearing and extending to and pivoted to the lug, and the brace-bars extending from the lugs to and pivoted to the central portion of the front axle-tree, substantially asset forth.
3. The combination, in a running-gear, of the front and rear axles, the bolster-bar pivoted to the front axle, the supporting-springs extending from the rear axle to the bolsterbar and secured to each, the independent piece secured to the middle portion of each of the springs having a downwardly-projecting perforated lug directly under the spring at an angle to the spring and substantially in line with a line drawn from the rear axle adjacent to the wheel-bearing to the central portion of the front axle, the brace-bar secured to the rear axle adjacent to the Wheelbearing and extending to one side of the perforated lug, the brace-bar extending from the lug to the central portion of the front axletree and pivoted thereto, and the bolt passing through perforations or eyes in the ends of the brace-bars and the perforation in the lug, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a running-gear, of the front and rear axles, the bolster-bar pivoted to the front axle, the body-supporting springs extending from the rear axle to the front bolster-bar and secured to each, the supporter-pieces secured to the under side and middle portion of the springs having an inwardly-extending projection adapted to support the body, and the downwardly-projecting perforated lug directly under the spring and at an acute angle to the spring and substantially in line with a line drawn from the rear axle adjacent to the wheel-- bearing to the middle portion of the front axle, the brace-bars secured to the rear axle adjacent to the wheel-bearing and extending to the lug on the under side of the spring, the Y-shapcd head-piece 11, the clip 15, spanning the front bolster-bar and axle and secured to the Y-shaped piece 11 thereto, and the brace-bars extending from the lug on the under side of the spring to the Y-shaped headpiece and secured thereto, and the bolts 12, passing through eyes in the end of the bracerods and the perforation in the lug on the under side of the spring, combined and used substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
