BINDING FOR BUGGY-TOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,218, dated December 1'7, 1889.
Application filed September 28, 1889. Serial No. 326,346. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing; at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Imitation Binding for Tops for Buggies and other Similar Vehicles, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement on tops for buggies and other similar vehicles; and it pertains more particularly to the mode of connecting the top to the rear part and to the construction and attachment of an imitation binding, covering the joint at the connection between the said parts mentioned above.
The object is to provide a joint and binding for the samewhich is durable, ornamental, and at the same time cheaply constructed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehicletop. Fig. 2 is a section of the joint, and 3 is a front view of a part of the binding.

In joining the parts the back curtain and stays are tacked onto the bowfirst. After this the top is drawn over and also tacked down. Finally, the imitation binding 9 .is tacked down, covering the joint between the leather parts.
This imitation binding is made out of sheet metal and either punched out or drawn through rollers. It may be in one piece; or, if preferred, the curved parts 10 10 at either end may be constructed separately and afterward suitably connected. It consists of the main part 11, forming a bead, and of two flanges 12 12, one or the two of which are provided with imitation stitching 13, and one of which-the upper one, preferably-is used to connect the binding to the top by tacks. \Vhen only one of the flanges 12 is provided with imitation stitching, the lower one, being the more observable one, is selected. The imitation stitching, being pressed into the metal, is best put on by passing the binding through a set of rollers provided with corresponding male and female dies.
A binding of this kind is far preferable to a leather one and cheaper than any other binding or other joint used for the purpose. It presents a nice even and straight line across the top, that can never be attained by a leather binding, which, being pliable, always shows a more or less crooked and wavy line and presents a knotty appearance. Since no stitching is required, its mode of attachment is quick and cheap. Another advantage of this joint is that the edges of the parts to be brought together do not need to be sewed in order to produce a seam to secure the binding to, but can be secured by tacking, which is much quicker and cheaper, and, after being covered by the binding, looks equally as well. I therefore do not wish the imitation bindingI use in con nection with my joint to be confounded. with a back valance described in Patent No. 300,971, of J nne 24, 1884,which is dependent on a sewed joint and is secured by compression on and around the leather seam, and is of course a more time-consuming and more expensive process.
Having described my invention, I claim as new The improved construction of a joint between the buggy-top and the parts to which its rear end connects, and which consists of the back bow, of the upper edges of the back curtain and back stays, which are tacked to the former, of the rear edges of the top, also tacked to the bow, in combination with a metallic imitation binding having a bead or moldin g and two flanges to either side thereof, said flanges about ninety degrees apart, so as to conform to the shape of the back bow and permit it to be tacked onto the same, snugly resting on the leather and fully covering the joint, all as shown and described.
