SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,791, dated December 10, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JULIUS I. LIVINGSTON and WILLIAM GRIsooM, J r., citizens of the United States of America, residing at Bound Brook, county of Somerset, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Plastic Compounds for Roofing, &c.; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in plastics, and has for its prime object the production of a compound for roofing and analogous purposes, which shall possess great fireproof qualities and a very low degree of sensitiveness to heat. It may be used directly upon a suitable sheathing or foundation, or may be applied to a suitable base or sheet of textile or fibrous material and used in the ordinary Way as roofing fabric.
The invention consists, essentially, in combining infusorial earth with maltha. The infusorial earth, admixed with the material named, gives to it the quality of resisting the action of heat and renders it substantially fire-proof. It also renders a roofing or coating less brittle in cold weather, as softer maltha can be used without being influenced by heat. It will be appreciated, therefore, that the infusorial earth adds important qualities to the compound to which it is added, since the uses of su ch compound expose them to the very conditions against which the infusorial earth is calculated to defend.- The infusorial earth, mixed in proper proportions with the maltha, will prevent the compound from growing soft and running when exposed to the suns rays in hot weather, andwill prevent the material from becoming brittle and cracking in cold weather, for the reason that softer material can be used when mixed with the infusorial earth without being influenced by heat. The presence of the infusorial earth also prevents sparks from locomotives, &c., from igniting or having any influence upon the compound.
In a patent granted to Truman J. Pearce present invention, therefore, contemplates an improvement upon the patent named. The infusorial earth adds its heat-resisting qualities to the maltha, and also prevents its cracking in low temperature for the reasons already stated.
In inter-mixing the infusorial earth with the maltha we employ the hot process, and heat the maltha or other carbon to perfect fusion, when the earth is mingled with it, and also bring it to a proper temperature when the mixture is to be applied to the roof or to thebasis of the roofing fabric.
The proportion of infusorial earth to be used dependsupon the hardness desired for different purposes and in difierent climates. To increase the hardness and density of the compound the percentage of the infusorial earth is increased, which will produce a compound more applicable for roofing direct upon a foundation or sheathing, and also for tropical and very mild climates, while for more severe climates and for the production of roofing fabric a less percentage of the infusorial earth need be used.
