ANTI-FRICTION GUIDE FOR SIGNAL-RODS.f
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,783, dated December 10, 1889.'
Application filed August 19, 1889. Serial No. 321,271` (No model.)
` for pipes or rods connecting switches and sig-Y nals with their operating mechanism. These guides, as heretofore constructed, consist of a grooved roller provided with trunnions which are supported upon short horizontal bars having upturned ends serving as stops to prevent'the rollers from dropping out of positiou, said bars being secured to or formed alignment of the signal pipes or rods or in their movements. The other construction is objectionable for the reason that -the slots are of necessity formed in independent posts for the reason above stated, thus increasing the cost of 'manufacture and erection of such guides.
The object of the invent-ion described herein is to so construct the guides as will prevent any accidental dislodgment of the rollers and permit of a series of the supporting-posts being secured to or formed integral with a common base-plate.
In general terms the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of my improved guides; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the practice of my invention, two, three, or more cheek-pieces or side plates l are Vformed integral with or secured to a common The cheek-pieces are provided base-plate 2. in their upper ends 'with horizontal slots 3, and through the upper walls of the slots are formed openings 4, through which the trunnions 5 of the grooved guide-rollers 6 are passed when adjusting the latter in position. 6o
The walls of the slots are made of a sufficient width relative to the length of the trunnions to afford bearing-surface for the trunnions of two adjacent rollers Without said trunnions coming in contact with each other, as shown in Fig. l. The openings 4 in the several cheek-pieces are in line with each other and are made of a width slightly greater than the diameters of the trunnions, so that the latter will enter freely when at right angles, .or ap- 7o proXimately so, with the `cheek-pieces.v It will be readily seen that the trunnions will be held from accidental displacement by the upper walls of the slots, and that by forming the openings 4 through the upper Walls of the 75 slots the rollers can be readily placed in and removed from position, while the several cheek-pieces form an integral structure with a common base-plate.
The pipes or rods are held in position on the 8o grooved rollers by rollers 7, mounted on a rod 8, passing through eyes formed in the upper ends of posts 9, projecting up from the cheek-pieces l, said rollers being especially useful in preventing any upsetting of the guide-rollers 6 85 by'the movement of the signal pipe or rod where the same passes in a curved pat-h around obstructions. j
I claim herein as my invention- The combination of a base-plate, a'series of 90 two or more cheek-pieces fixed thereto and provided with horizontalblocks having openings to their upper walls, a guide-roller provided with trunnions mounted in said slots, and retaining-rollers mounted ,in posts projecting upwardly from the cheek-pieces, said retaining-rollers serving to prevent the accidental displacement of the guide-rollers, substantially as set forth.
